Job summary

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP is seeking a Water/Wastewater Process Mechanical Engineer in Blacksburg, VA. The role covers evaluation, planning, design and construction administration of municipal water and wastewater facilities, with emphasis on mechanical, piping, and pumping systems.

The ideal candidate has 5–10 years of relevant experience, ABET-accredited engineering degree, and strong communication skills. PE license in Virginia is preferred; Master’s degree is a plus.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited engineering degree required.
  • 5–10 years in evaluating and designing process piping and mechanical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, fluid mechanics and treatment processes.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD; familiarity with Revit desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Assist planning, design, and analysis of water and wastewater facility infrastructure.
  • Develop plans, specs, and cost estimates for pumping stations and treatment facilities.
  • Perform hydraulic analyses, equipment selection, and system sizing.
  • Support permitting and regulatory coordination for projects.
  • Provide construction administration, shop drawing reviews, and site observations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects on time and budget.

The Water/Wastewater Process Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the evaluation, planning, design, and construction administration of municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities & processes, distribution and collection systems, chemical storage & feed systems, and process mechanical, piping and pumping systems. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the planning, design, and analysis of water and wastewater treatment facility infrastructure and associated process mechanical systems
  • Develop plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates for pumping stations, treatment facilities, and related infrastructure
  • Perform hydraulic analyses, equipment selection, and system sizing
  • Support project development activities including permitting and coordination with regulatory agencies
  • Provide construction administration services, including shop drawing review, field observations, and coordination with contractors
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects on schedule and within budget
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in evaluating and designing process piping and process mechanical systems
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, fluid mechanics, and treatment processes
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office; familiarity with Revit or other 3D modeling software is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering
  • Familiarity and experience with water and wastewater treatment facility processes and design
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the commonwealth of Virginia

The expected compensation range for this position is $90,000.00 - $185,000.00. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position.
