Job summary

Tetra Tech in Houston, TX seeks a Water/Wastewater Engineer to support municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects from planning through construction. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and public-sector clients to deliver design, permitting, and construction support.

The role requires 3+ years of engineering experience, a Civil/Environmental background, and relevant licensure (EIT/PE) with Texas licensure within a year. Occasional travel is expected.

  • EIT or PE license in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Texas licensure within one year preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant engineering experience; strong communication and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of codes, regulations, and industry standards; valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Design water-related infrastructure and water resource facilities.
  • Conduct site investigations and prepare assessment reports.
  • Prepare calculations, reports, drawings, and specs.
  • Coordinate with clients, subconsultants, and regulators.
  • Support project execution from planning to bid packages.
  • Provide construction phase services including bid evaluations and shop drawing reviews.
  • Ensure technical accuracy and proper documentation across deliverables.
  • Assist with design modifications and coordinate changes with the team.

Position Summary:

The Water/Wastewater Engineer supports the planning, design, permitting, and construction of municipal water, wastewater, and sanitary sewer infrastructure projects. The role contributes technical expertise to ensure projects are delivered accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform engineering design for water-related infrastructure and water resource facilities.
  • Conduct site investigations and inspections and prepare detailed assessment reports.
  • Prepare design calculations, technical reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Evaluate design alternatives, resolve technical issues, and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Coordinate project activities with clients, subconsultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Support project execution from conceptual planning through permitting and development of final plans, specifications, and bid packages.
  • Provide technical design support for water distribution systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and sanitary sewer collection systems.
  • Ensure technical accuracy, adherence to engineering standards, and proper documentation across design deliverables.
  • Provide construction phase services, including bid evaluations, plan clarifications, shop drawing reviews, progress report reviews, and change order evaluations.
  • Interpret specifications and drawings, recommend design modifications, and coordinate changes with the design team.
  • Independently assess engineering problems and recommend solutions to engineering discipline leads while ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil or Environmental Engineering, registered in Texas or ability to obtain Texas licensure within one year.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Project.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling software.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience with municipal infrastructure design and permitting.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform office-based engineering work with occasional field visits to project sites.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, including occasional work on active construction sites.
  • Ability to lift and carry light to moderate equipment or materials as needed.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
  • Combination of office environment and outdoor field settings.
  • Occasional exposure to varying weather conditions during site visits.
  • Moderate noise levels may be present during construction-related activities.
