  • Enforce safety standards and maintain plant records and reports for local/state/federal agencies.
  • Interact with the public on occasion with patience and tact regarding complaints.
  • Check water plant on weekends.
  • May supervise trainees and perform other duties as assigned.

General Description

This is skilled technical work involving the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of water treatment and distribution facilities. Responsibilities include performing routine inspections, process control testing, equipment operation, and assisting with both preventive and corrective maintenance of plant equipment, machinery, and related systems. Employees are responsible for maintaining accurate operational records, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and responding to operational issues as needed to support continuous plant operations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Water Plant Chief or Assistant Chief Operator or designated supervisor and is reviewed through observation, reports, discussions, and evaluation of results achieved.


Essential Job Functions


  • Maintenance and ground keeping of all water plants. Perform routine maintenance on all water plant equipment.

  • Supervises and participates in the inspection, adjustment and repairs of treatment plant equipment, such as chemical feeders, pumps, valves, screens and related equipment.

  • Takes samples and delivers them to reviewing agencies as required.

  • Enforces safety standards and regulations. Maintains plant records, compiles and submits operation reports for submittal to local, state and federal agencies.

  • Work includes some public contact at times, involving complaint situations which the employee must meet with patience and tact.

  • Check water plant on weekends.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees. May be required to be responsible for limited supervision of trainees

  • Performs any other duties or tasks that may be assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports of plant operations.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work environment.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Thorough knowledge of operating principles and theories of water plants.

  • Graduation from high school, vocational school, or recognized equivalent certification.

  • Possession of a current Florida Class C or higher Water Certification.

  • Must possess a valid State of Florida driver's license.

Screwdrivers, assorted socket wrenches, grease gun, brooms, water hoses, pliers, hydrant wrenches, pressure gauges, butane torch, punches, ladder, allen wrench, hammers, chlorine valve wrench, chisel, paint brush and rollers, pressure cleaner, telephone, shovel, rake, pry bar, chlorine residual analyzer, electric hoist, lawn mowers, weed eater, safety equipment, hack saw, Scott air pack, air pump, well sounder, fire extinguisher, sample bottles, motor hoist, mop, communication radio, fire hydrant hose, computer, type writer, copy machine, pruners, cut off wrench, valve wrench.


Physical Requirements

Work requires very frequent standing, speaking, hearing and frequent walking, sitting, lifting objects less than 40 lbs., bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, digging, reaching over head, kneeling, climbing, reading and writing. Requires frequent operation of a pick-up truck on and off road. Works frequently with chemicals and in extreme weather, heights, confined areas and areas of excessive noise. Requires occasional typing/CRT.


Job Location

All City owned buildings, parks, grounds and recreation facilities. Any off-site locations and facilities utilized as part of the City's participation or involvement in an event, activity or job assignment.
