GENERAL PURPOSE
The Water Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of water treatment facilities and related equipment to ensure compliance with applicable permits, regulations, and operational requirements.
This position operates and monitors pumps, motors, treatment equipment, instrumentation, controls, and other water system components. The Water Plant Operator performs routine and preventative maintenance, collects and analyzes water samples, adjusts chemical dosages, maintains accurate operational records, and troubleshoots equipment and process issues.
The position requires strict adherence to all safety, environmental, regulatory, and company requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Active Florida Class C or higher Water Operator's License required.
- Valid Florida driver's license required.
- Florida-licensed Water Operators only.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform water plant operations and maintenance procedures in accordance with established policies, procedures, permits, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and adjust the operation of water plant pumps, motors, valves, filters, meters, and other treatment equipment.
- Monitor flow meters, gauges, pressures, flow ratios, controls, and other instrumentation through instrument panels and programmable logic control systems.
- Accurately read, interpret, and record gauges, dials, meters, and other instruments.
- Troubleshoot operational and equipment problems and take appropriate corrective action.
- Inspect, service, maintain, and repair water system equipment, including pumps, valves, motors, filters, meters, and related components.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance and assist with complex maintenance and repair activities.
- Inspect water treatment facilities, distribution facilities, water sources, storage tanks, and related infrastructure to identify maintenance or repair needs.
- Collect water samples and perform or assist with chemical and physical laboratory testing.
- Adjust chemical dosages as necessary to support effective process control and water quality.
- Maintain accurate and timely shift logs, operational records, reports, and other documentation required by permits, regulations, and company procedures.
- Report suspected equipment malfunctions, process variances, safety concerns, and other operational issues to the appropriate supervisor.
- Inspect, service, and replace meters, fittings, meter boxes, and related components.
- Operate front-end loaders and other vehicles and equipment as assigned.
- Perform general plant maintenance, including sweeping, cleaning, painting, landscaping, and other related activities.
- Assist with the training of other water department personnel.
- Coordinate with other company departments when additional assistance or repairs are required.
- May be responsible for ordering, storing, using, and maintaining inventory of supplies necessary for plant and system operations.
- May read water meters.
- Maintain professional and effective relationships with employees, other departments, customers, and the general public.
- Respond professionally to public inquiries and complaints regarding water system operations.
- Maintain regular and timely attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- Active Florida Class C Water Operator's License or higher; and
- At least one (1) year of experience related to the construction, repair, maintenance, or operation of water collection or treatment systems, including operation of related maintenance equipment; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in water treatment and water distribution systems.
- Knowledge of water pipe installation, connection, maintenance, and repair.
- Knowledge of water treatment plant operation and maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain water treatment equipment, vehicles, tools, and related equipment.
- Ability to interpret chemical and biological analyses and use test results to support effective process control.
- Ability to troubleshoot operational and mechanical problems.
- Ability to maintain accurate logs, records, reports, and documentation.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, customers, and the public.
- Ability to work independently while following established procedures, safety requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Ability to assist with training and provide direction to other employees when assigned.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Detection devices, mobile radio/phone, personal computer, Microsoft Office and other software applications, copier, fax machine, plant instrumentation, laboratory testing equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position.
