Job summary

The City of Huron seeks a dependable Water & Sewer Maintenance Worker to join its Water and Sewer Department. The role focuses on maintaining and repairing water distribution and sewer collection systems and may require availability for evenings, weekends, and emergencies.

Under supervision, the worker may use independent judgment within regulations and participate in paid on-the-job training to obtain required Class I certifications. This is an on-site, physically demanding position.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience operating light and medium equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain Class I Water Distribution Certification and Class I Sewer Collection Certification within two years of employment.
  • Ability to obtain South Dakota Class B CDL with N endorsement within 60 calendar days of employment.

  • Perform maintenance on water distribution and sewer collection systems.

Water & Sewer Maintenance Worker- Uncertified

The City is seeking a dependable, motivated individual to join its Water and Sewer Department. This position performs essential work maintaining and repairing the community’s water distribution and sewer collection systems.


Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Water & Sewer Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining and repairing water distribution and collection lines. Work assignments vary, and the employee may use independent judgment and decision-making within established federal and state regulations.


This position may require work during evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts.


Essential Duties

  • Assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing water mains, sewer mains, water service connections, fire hydrants, lift stations, and valves
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on water distribution and sewer collection systems
  • Operate light and medium equipment as assigned
  • Maintain and update system maps and related records
  • Respond to emergency water and sewer system issues as needed
  • Follow established safety procedures, regulations, and department policies
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience operating light and medium equipment is preferred
  • Ability to obtain Class I Water Distribution Certification and Class I Sewer Collection Certification within two years of employment
  • Ability to maintain required certifications through continuing education throughout employment
  • Ability to obtain a valid South Dakota Class B Commercial Driver License with N endorsement within 60 calendar days of employment
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and work safely in a variety of conditions

Working Conditions

This position involves regular physical activity, including climbing, bending, stooping, walking, kneeling, crawling, and lifting up to 75 pounds independently and greater weights with assistance. Work is frequently performed outdoors and in uncontrollable conditions, including heat, cold, dampness, exposure to chemicals, and potential exposure to infectious wastes.


Special Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain the appropriate Water Distribution and Sewer Collection certifications as required for the position
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid South Dakota Class B CDL with N endorsement

The successful applicant will receive paid on-the-job training to obtain required Class I Water Distribution and Class I Sewer Collection certifications.
