Job summary

The City of Washington is seeking a heavy‑duty Maintenance Worker to repair and replace water and sewer lines, hydrants, taps, and meters. You will perform utility locates, read maps, and assist with traffic control while working with hand tools and light equipment.

Requires a high school diploma or GED and 1–4 years of construction or maintenance experience; a valid North Carolina driver's license is required. The role involves heavy physical work and adherence to safety practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and 1–4 years' general construction or maintenance experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid NC driver's license and acceptable driving record.
• Knowledge of tools, materials and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work.
• Knowledge of municipal maintenance and construction practices.
• Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions in the work.

Responsibilities

• Performs unskilled and semi-skilled trades work in the construction, replacement and repair of water and sewer lines.
• Maintains hydrants and assists in meter changeouts.
• Performs utility locates, reads maps and completes locate orders from ULOCO.
• Cleans stopped sewer lines with pressurized hoses, rakes, and shovels.
• Assists with traffic control.
• Operates light construction equipment and back fills trenches.
• Performs minor preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Performs and assists with making water and sewer taps, installing fire hydrants and installing and replacing water meters.
