Qualifications

  • Maintains and repairs sidewalks and performs minor road maintenance such as patching holes with asphalt and repairing/replacing traffic signs.
  • Cleans, maintains, and repairs storm drains and boxes; ensures proper drainage of ditches.
  • Maintains grounds at wastewater treatment plant and handles related tasks as needed.
  • Assists other crews with tasks such as laying pipe for water and sewer lines, flagging traffic, and moving equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs assigned tools and equipment.

Job description

Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing duties related to the maintenance and beautification of City grounds. All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.

As a municipal organization, the City of St. Marys is an emergency provider of services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate City of St. Marys employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

MAJOR DUTIES
  1. Mows and weeds City grounds.
  2. Plants flowers and shrubs
  3. Fertilizes and water grounds, flowers, and/or shrubs as needed.
  4. Removes debris.
  5. Trim shrubbery and trees; removes brush and limbs.
  6. Maintains and repairs sidewalks and performs minor road maintenance such as patching holes with asphalt and repairing/replacing traffic signs.
  7. Cleans, maintains, and repairs storm drain and boxes; ensures that drainage ditches are graded to drain properly.
  8. Maintains grounds at wastewater treatment plant; removes solid waste from drying beds; rakes sand in drying beds or refills missing sand.
  9. Hauls sludge from sewer plant to County Dump.
  10. Assists other crews in areas such as laying pipe for water and sewer lines, flagging traffic, and moving equipment.
  11. Maintains and repairs assigned tools and equipment.
  12. Installs lights for special events; sorts supplies, inspects bulbs, changes bulbs and repairs inoperable lights.
  13. Performs all other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  1. Knowledge of safety rules.
  2. Knowledge of hand tools and power tools.
  3. Knowledge of landscaping.
  4. Knowledge of computers and job related software.
  5. Skill in oral and written communication.
  6. Skill in operating various types of equipment.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Water and Sewer Field Maintenance Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include EPD guidelines, safety rules and regulations, and personnel policy. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of variety of equipment operation and maintenance duties.
  • The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of specialized maintenance and repair functions. Success in this position contributes to efficient and effective operations of this department.

  • Contacts are typically with supervisor, co-workers, office staff, and general public. Dealing with environmental challenges and the weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed typically while sitting, standing, walking, stooping or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally lifts heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, climbs, and utilizes sense of smell.
  • The work is performed in a noisy place or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and
  • Less than one year of related experience required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
