Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Water Resources Intern to join our hydrology and hydraulics team. You will support stormwater analyses for land development projects, from residential subdivisions to commercial sites, applying coursework to real-world design.

The role provides exposure to FEMA floodplain regulations, local ordinances, and drainage report preparation, with mentorship from senior engineers and opportunities to visit field sites.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program (Civil or Environmental preferred).
• Strong verbal and written communication; professional interaction with clients and team members.
• Willingness to learn in a cross-disciplinary work environment.
• Willingness to attend site visits and perform outdoor fieldwork.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing hydrologic and hydraulic models to support stormwater design for land development projects.
• Support the design of detention and retention facilities, storm drain systems, and best management practices for residential and commercial sites.
• Assist in preparing drainage reports, floodplain studies, and Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) applications for regulatory submittal.
• Research FEMA floodplain maps and local stormwater ordinances and watershed data for project sites.
• Utilize hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software to analyze existing and proposed drainage conditions.
• Coordinate with civil engineers and local agencies to support stormwater permitting and plan review comments.

The Water Resources Intern will join a water resources engineering team supporting hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for stormwater management on land development projects, including residential subdivisions, commercial sites, and mixed-use developments. Projects range from small drainage studies to large detention and floodplain analyses for private developers, homebuilders, and municipal clients. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply hydrology and hydraulics coursework to real-world development projects.

As a Water Resources Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply regulatory standards — including FEMA floodplain regulations and local stormwater ordinances — in the design process and will assist Senior Engineers in the preparation of drainage reports, detention facility designs, and floodplain studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Required Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program, preferably Civil or Environmental Engineering.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
• Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
• Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

• Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in water resources or stormwater engineering.
• Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software.
