Job summary

Pierce County's Surface Water Management team seeks a field-focused specialist to identify and respond to activities that could discharge pollutants into stormwater systems. You will support Phase I NPDES permit implementation and work with diverse partners to protect streams, lakes, and Puget Sound in Tacoma and beyond.

You'll interpret environmental data, conduct inspections, calibrate equipment, maintain records, and collaborate with agencies and the public.

Qualifications

• One or more years of progressively responsible related experience.
• Two years of college or post-high school technical training.
• A resume and cover letter are required for this position.
• A valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and assist with on-site inspections of stormwater facilities to verify operation and BMP implementation.
• Direct citizens and agencies on spill prevention and water quality, and respond to routine inquiries.
• Calibrate and maintain field sampling and monitoring equipment.
• Measure water levels in surface and groundwater monitoring wells.
• Take field measurements: temperature, conductivity, pH, turbidity, DO.
• Perform QA/QC and chain-of-custody processing for samples.
• Collect routine water quality samples and prepare labels and chain-of-custody reports.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

• Conduct and assist with complex on-site inspections of stormwater management facilities associated with industrial, commercial, and multi-family land use; determine or verify the proper operation and maintenance of stormwater management facilities and implementation of stormwater Best Management Practices.
• Refer and direct citizens, engineers, contractors, and other agencies in matters of spill prevention, water quality protection, and stormwater management; respond to routine questions and information requests.
• Perform calibration and maintenance procedures on field sampling and monitoring equipment.
• Perform water-level measurements from surface/ground water monitoring wells.
• Perform field measurements such as water temperature, specific conductance, pH, turbidity and dissolved oxygen from both surface and ground water sources.
• Perform data quality assurance and control and chain of custody processing.
• Perform routine water quality sampling, prepare labels, and complete chain-of-custody reports; conduct sampling and field investigations for Surface Water Management staff, other County departments, governmental agencies and members of the public.
