Job summary

County of Sonoma seeks an Environmental Specialist I to support environmental compliance for water-related public works projects. The role involves preparing CEQA and NEPA documents, assisting in permit applications, and conducting field assessments of aquatic and terrestrial habitats to evaluate potential environmental impacts.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and experience with environmental studies and permitting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in planning, engineering, water-related physical and/or biological sciences, environmental studies, environmental law, natural resource or watershed management, or a closely related field.
• One year of experience with engineering, environmental impact assessments and permitting for public works projects.
• Experience preparing CEQA/NEPA documents or environmental regulatory permits is a plus.
• Knowledge of environmental laws (CEQA/NEPA, Clean Water Act, Porter-Cologne) and ability to review studies/reports.
• Ability to analyze project reports, write clearly, and present information to boards or committees.

Responsibilities

• Assist with CEQA studies and environmental permit applications.
• Perform field assessments of aquatic/terrestrial habitats and related resources.
• Review natural resource studies and project conditions to evaluate impacts.
• Assist in preparing tracking tools, SOPs, and environmental reports.
• Collaborate with planners, engineers, and contractors on public projects.
