Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Hartford is seeking a Group Exercise Instructor for Aqua Fitness in Ellington, CT. The role supports the Wellness department by teaching safe, effective classes and promoting total fitness development for members.

Under the Wellness Director, you will greet members, educate them about YMCA programs, and maintain a professional standard while working as part of a collaborative team. Attendance at staff meetings is required.

Qualifications

• CPR certification (current)
• National cert in group fitness or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise
• Certification in Aqua Zumba or equivalent preferred
• At least 1 year teaching group wellness classes preferred
• Available to teach weekday mornings and sub on weekends

Responsibilities

• Teach a safe and effective group exercise class according to program guidelines.
• Supervise participants and report safety concerns to supervisor.
• Greet members, address concerns, and educate them on YMCA programs.
• Represent the YMCA professionally and work as part of a team.
• Ensure inclusivity across age, gender, race, and fitness levels.
• Assist with equipment upkeep and report issues promptly.
• Be familiar with emergency procedures and active in emergencies.
• Attend mandatory staff meetings and arrange substitutes as needed.

Education

CPR certification

National certification in group fitness (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Wellness Director, a Group Exercise Instructor teaches a safe and effective class which promotes total fitness development for members. Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; makes relationship building the number one priority. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Hartford is conveyed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Conducts group exercise classes according to the YMCA of Greater Hartford Program Quality Guidelines, as well as the specific class format.
• Supervise class participants and activities to ensure safety and report any irregularities to supervisor immediately.
• Acknowledge new members by addressing their concerns, informing and educating them on YMCA’s programs.
• Be a professional representative of the YMCA.
• Be able to work as a team member, assisting fellow staff when necessary.
• Make yourself available to all members regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or fitness level. Share your knowledge and be a resource for sound health and fitness information.
• Take responsibility to keep pool equipment neat and clean. Report any equipment issues to Wellness or Aquatics Director.
• Be familiar with emergency procedures. Respond promptly and appropriately.
• Maintain good attendance. Give supervisor at least two-week notice of schedule changes.
• Assume total responsibility for obtaining qualified substitutes when needed and inform supervisor.
• Allow at least ten minutes to prepare for class and allow for at least five minutes after class to be available for members.
• Arrive for assigned class well-groomed and in proper uniform.
• Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.
• Products or services that are not a part of the YMCA program(s) shall not be promoted or endorsed by an employee to any member or guest whether the employee is “on the clock” or not.
• All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Possess and maintain current CPR certification.
• National certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
• Certification in areas of expertise, for example Aqua Zumba.
• At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
• Must be available to teach weekday mornings and to sub on occasion on the weekends.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

• Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
• Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 30 pounds in weight.
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
