Job summary

Alabama Power, part of Southern Company, is seeking an Environmental Specialist/Engineer (Environmental Compliance – Water) for our Birmingham, AL headquarters. You will support Power Delivery projects by ensuring water-related environmental compliance across permitting, site selection, and project planning.

The role requires GIS experience, knowledge of NEPA and Clean Water Act permits, and ability to coordinate with regulators and internal teams to maintain schedules and mitigate risks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Engineering, Environmental Science, Natural Resources or related field preferred.
• Experience utilizing GIS for geospatial analysis.
• Experience writing and obtaining water-related environmental permits from the USACE.
• Knowledge of NEPA, Clean Water Act Section 404 & 10, Endangered Species Act, NHPA.
• Experience coordinating with regulatory agencies and managing multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate natural resource investigations (wetlands, threatened and endangered species surveys, cultural resource and archaeological surveys).
• Manage environmental permitting activities, including USACE Section 404 and Section 10 permits.
• Partner with CRE and internal stakeholders for due diligence on property acquisitions and site selection.
• Coordinate with project teams and regulatory agencies to incorporate environmental requirements into schedules.
• Identify environmental risks and develop mitigation strategies to maintain project schedules.
