Base compensation ranges from $120,000 to $150,000 plus discretionary year-end bonus, based on experience. The role focuses on designing water and wastewater facilities, coordinating regulatory permits, and mentoring junior staff within a trusted, long-standing firm.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or closely related field.
• 5-10 years of hands on water and wastewater design experience.
• PE license or will have it within six to twelve months.
• Strong knowledge of NJDEP regulations and EPA/SDWA.
• AutoCAD and technical writing to produce standalone reports.

Responsibilities

• Design and engineer water and wastewater facilities, pumping stations, storage facilities, and distribution/collection systems.
• Perform feasibility and planning studies under EPA and NJDEP guidelines.
• Prepare technical documentation, calculations, and cost estimates.

Water Resources Design Engineer (Water or Wastewater)

Location: Parsippany, New Jersey or Sparta, New Jersey. Hybrid, with real flexibility.

Compensation: $120,000 to $150,000 base, depending on experience, plus a discretionary year end bonus.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client is a privately held northern New Jersey consulting engineering firm, in business for over forty years, doing site and civil, water and wastewater, municipal, MEP and environmental engineering for municipalities, utilities, county and state agencies, and private clients. Many of the municipal and utility clients the firm started with are still clients today. The firm is growing steadily and has been named a Best Place to Work three years running.

The water resources practice is adding a senior design engineer to anchor its technical bench. The firm has a strong group of project managers carrying municipal and authority relationships, and it wants an engineer of equal weight on the technical side: the person the project managers bring the hard design questions to, and the one who sets the standard for the junior staff coming up behind.

This is a design seat and it is meant to stay one. The firm is not looking for someone who will use it as a step into project management six months after the PE lands. If you like being the person who actually produces the design, and you want to keep doing that, this is a rare seat in this market.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

• Design and engineering. Plan and design water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, storage facilities, and distribution and collection systems to AWWA, ASCE and NSF/ANSI standards and to the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act, with client needs, operability and constructability built in.
• Feasibility and planning studies. Hydraulic, process and environmental evaluations under EPA and NJDEP guidelines, aimed at optimized, cost effective solutions.
• Technical documentation. Engineering calculations, reports, technical specifications, cost estimates and contract documents conforming to NJDEP regulations and NPDES permitting criteria.
• Regulatory coordination. Lead and support permitting: NJPDES permits, Treatment Works Approvals, and the Bureau of Water System Engineering.
• Site investigations. Field assessments and site inspections supporting both design and construction phase work.
• Cross disciplinary collaboration. Work with the structural, civil and MEP groups internally, and with vendors and subcontractors, to deliver integrated packages.
• Mentorship. Bring the junior engineering staff along on technical work, regulatory knowledge and design procedure.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
• 5-10 years of hands on water and wastewater design experience. You should be productive walking in the door rather than ramping up.
• PE license, or close enough that you will have it within roughly six to twelve months.
• Strong working knowledge of NJDEP regulations and permitting, plus the relevant federal standards: EPA, CWA, SDWA.
• AutoCAD, and the technical writing to produce reports and specifications that stand on their own.
• A genuine preference for staying technical.
• Strongly preferred: treatment plant and pumping station design. If your experience is weighted to one side, wastewater is the preferred side.
• Nice to have: experience with funding applications and the State Revolving Fund process, and with municipal and utility clients.
