Description

The Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the wastewater treatment facility. S/he will operate, monitor, maintain, and trouble-shoot the wastewater treatment facility and its processes. This role ensures that all processes are maintained to meet regulatory standards and protect public health and the environment.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm. Every other weekend, Saturday 7a-Noon

Pay

Based on experience, typical range $25-30 per hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform all aspects of sampling, monitoring, and testing required to maintain compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations governing the wastewater treatment process, storm water and sludge management.
  • Perform the installation, maintenance, and repair of the physical plant and pump stations and all components.
  • Assist in the performance of regular and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and machinery.
  • Perform daily checks of the wastewater treatment process and periodic checks of pump stations.
  • Adjust chemical feed systems to maintain proper treatment levels.
  • Maintain logs, reports, and regulatory documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Perform all work in conformance to Occupational Safety and Health Act regulations.
  • Follow all safety and environmental procedures to ensure a safe workplace.
  • Maintain open communications regarding the treatment process and pump stations operation and malfunction as well as make recommendations for repairs and improvements to the system.
  • Assist with facility housekeeping and grounds maintenance as required.
  • Conduct the necessary weekend checks of the treatment plant on a rotating basis.
  • Backfill to other positions as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Position Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform and document various laboratory tests assigned for the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Working knowledge of the operation, methods and procedures of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical equipment and the ability to diagnose and correct equipment malfunction.
  • Basic knowledge of State and Federal rules governing wastewater discharges and worker’s safety.
  • Ability to work with independence and to make routine decisions on the operation of the plant processes and equipment as needed.
  • Ability to navigate and operate process equipment control screens.
  • Ability to adapt effectively within a continually changing and demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to communicate effectively, in English, in order to maintain high levels of safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Ability to read and comprehend standard operating procedures and company guidelines written in English, in order to maintain regulatory compliance.
Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
  • Valid Wastewater Operator certification (or ability to obtain within a specified time frame, depending on state requirements).
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, mechanical systems, and laboratory testing procedures preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, and technical instructions.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting.
  • Experience operating heavy machinery, preferably at a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Work in outdoor environments and in conditions involving exposure to odors, chemicals, and wastewater.
