Job summary

City of White Settlement is seeking a Water or Wastewater Technician to maintain water distribution and wastewater systems. The role requires working evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.

Training is provided for those with no experience, and licenses must be obtained within stated timeframes. Typical duties include repairing sewer lines, lift stations, and water lines; operating heavy equipment; and recording maintenance data.

Qualifications

  • Valid Texas class C driver’s license with a good driving record is required.
  • No experience is required as training is provided.
  • Wastewater certification or license requirements must be obtained within specified timelines.
  • Desirable certifications include Class C Ground Treatment or Wastewater Collections.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of wastewater collection systems and facilities, including cleaning, installations, and repairs of sewer lines and lift stations.
  • Inspect, clean, and repair wastewater lines, pumps, manholes, and basins to prevent blockages and overflows.
  • Operate equipment such as loaders, backhoes, hydro-vacuum trucks, and sewer cleaners.
  • Handle installation, construction, and repair of wastewater systems.
  • Follow safety controls and wear PPE, including respirators for confined spaces.
  • Maintain, fuel, stock, and clean vehicles and tools for proper operation.
  • Record data and maintain work orders and system maintenance records.

Description

Under the general supervision of the Crew Leader, the Water or Wastewater Technician performs maintenance of the City’s water production and distribution system or the City’s wastewater collection systems and facilities, including cleaning, installing, and repairing sewer lines and maintenance on lift stations . Requires on-call work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. May work with other divisions of Public Works in cross-training exercises.

  • Maintain wastewater collection systems and facilities, including cleaning, installations, and repairs of sewer lines; and maintenance on lift stations;
  • Inspect, clean, and repair wastewater collection lines, pumps, manholes, and catch basins to prevent blockages and overflows;
  • Operate various types of equipment, including loaders, backhoes, hydro-vacuum trucks, and sewer cleaning machines;
  • Assist in the installation, construction, and repair of the wastewater collection system;
  • Implement and follow traffic safety controls and wear personal protective equipment, including respirators for confined spaces;
  • Maintain, fuel, stock, and clean vehicles, equipment, and tools to ensure proper working conditions;
  • Install and repair water lines and remove sewer chokes;
  • Perform maintenance on lift stations;
  • Respond to emergency calls and public inquiries regarding system issues;
  • Record data and maintain records using computer software for work orders and system maintenance.

Requirements

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED;
  • Must be 18 years or older;
  • A valid Texas class C driver’s license is required with a good driving record;
  • No experience is required as we will train you;
  • If no previous experience, a Class D water license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) must be obtained within 12 months of eligibility. If existing experience, at the direction of the supervisor, either a Class C water distribution license or a Class D water distribution license will be required within 12 months after eligibility. Eligibility is defined as the completion of the TCEQ-required classes necessary to test.
  • Valid Class "C" Wastewater Collections certification through TCEQ or ability to obtain within 2 years. (For Wastewater Technician)

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Valid Class "C" Ground Treatment or Wastewater Collections Operations Certification through TCEQ;
  • Knowledge of sewer systems, water distribution, and the proper use of maintenance tools and equipment;
  • Understanding of hazards associated with trench work and construction, along with knowledge of relevant federal and state regulations;
  • 2 years of utility or plumbing experience preferred;
  • Knowledge of plumbing tools and materials use;
  • Experience and knowledge of basic construction methods and a wide variety of equipment used in the construction or repair of wastewater collection systems;
  • Experience and knowledge of testing and sampling of wastewater;
  • Confined space or trench safety knowledge or certification;
  • Experience and knowledge with a wide variety of basic equipment, safety, and operation standards and procedures;

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable and proven proficiency levels in the above-required knowledge, skills, abilities, education, training, or licensing could be considered as a possible substitute for the above industry-specified training or experience requirements for this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, lift heavy objects, and work in demanding conditions, including heights and confined spaces;
  • Wastewater collection work involves exposure to wastewater, chemicals, hazardous materials, noise, and varying weather conditions;
  • Employees may work at heights, in confined spaces, and are often required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis;
  • Ability to work inside and outside, exposure to varying weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, temperature swings, rain, etc.), exposure to the sun, exposure to moving objects, operating assigned vehicles, movement on uneven terrain and city areas;
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, run, crouch, bend, stoop, kneel, and lift;
  • Demonstrate patience and flexibility in changing job demands and when interacting with employees, visitors, and the public;
  • May be required to work immediately before, during, or after an emergency or disaster;
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress;
  • Work with frequent interruptions;
  • Manipulate and perform good hand, eye, and foot coordination, mobility, and dexterity;
  • Maintain physical activity and mental alertness over prolonged periods of time;
  • Manipulate and load/unload heavy objects;
