Core Responsibilities
- Team Management and Development: Building, maintaining, and training a high‑performing waste services engineering team. This includes recruiting talent, assigning responsibilities, mentoring staff, and fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.
- Project Oversight & Resource Allocation: Overseeing the execution of waste projects, ensuring quality, timeliness, and budget adherence. The manager will plan resources, assign qualified resources per the scope of work, and ensure resources are following HDR’s project execution process.
- Strategic Growth & Business Planning: Supporting regional and national growth strategies by identifying market opportunities, developing client relationships, and aligning team capabilities with business objectives. This will include creating annual area waste vision statements that align team goals with overall company goals to include resource growth, bookings, revenue, and profit targets.
- Client Engagement and Relationship Management: Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key clients in the area and region. Understanding client goals and translating them into effective execution strategies that deliver value and build long‑term partnerships.
- Technical Leadership and Innovation: Working with the national technical leaders to guide the technical direction of the waste discipline, promoting continuous improvement, and supporting the development of specialized expertise. This may include contributing to industry professional organizations through technical papers, presentations, and participation in industry conferences.
- Collaboration and Integration: Work with Client Managers, Operational Managers, and Technical Leaders to ensure seamless integration of services and consistent delivery of world‑class solutions.
Additional Responsibilities
- Taking responsibility for staff development and mentorship including deploying technical onboarding, monthly technical one‑on‑ones, internal and external technical and/or business class training content, and technical mentorship for Area BC staff.
- Facilitating the identification of project delivery team requirements (experience, expertise, availability) for Area projects.
- Partnering with National and Area Business Class Leadership to support area level technical and delivery staff recruitment and retention.
- Participating and supporting the local area/region in Go/No‑Go’s, proposal development, and pursuits within the Waste Services Business Class.
- Leading proposal technical reviews.
- Driving HDR’s Quality Processes and Procedures including implementing business group and business class specific quality process enhancements in partnership with Area Professional Services.
- Achieving a 70% utilization goal by actively leading or supporting projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous staff supervision experience preferred
- Actively engaged in professional or industry associations to enhance HDR technical expertise and brand
- Subject Matter Expert or strong knowledge of a variety of waste planning, facility design and management services
- Technical design experience with landfills, transfer stations, drop‑off centers, MRFs and other solid waste management facilities, including knowledge of operations
- Experience mentoring and coordinating workshare with multiple area offices or combination in‑person and remote teams
- Knowledge and experience that align with Area and Regional clients, stakeholders, and regional industry standards and practices
- Local candidates are preferred
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
- 10 years of experience
- Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
- Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience
- Experienced in development and management of diverse teams
- Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture is a must
