Job description

Position Summary

Fabricates wooden crates, pallets or boxes and packs items such as steel rings, forged parts, or other large or oddly shaped products under moderate to constant supervision. The job requires performing tasks listed below.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Read blueprints, shipping notices, and other specifications, and inspect product to determine size and shape of container; determine materials and types of supports and braces to be used.
• Lay out dimensions on materials with ruler, measuring tape, and pencil.
• Saw materials to size.
• Assemble materials.
• Bolts heavy pieces to bottom of container or skid.
• Build crate around large or odd shaped articles.
• Build cover for crate.
• Repair broken crates.
• Sharpen or replace saw blades.

Required Skills

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group situations.
• Mathematical skills: add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure; compute rates, ratios, percentages; draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Apply commonsense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagram instructions; solve problems with multiple concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Work with basic carpentry tools such as hammer, stapler, tape measure, nail gun, table saw, radial saw, circular saw, router, and band saw.

Experience and Education

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Demands

The position requires the use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Frequency: sit regularly; occasionally stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must occasionally lift or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
