Job summary

Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is seeking a warehouse associate to support daily operations, including sorting, packing, and distributing donated food.

You will handle shipments, maintain FIFO, and ensure safe handling standards while collaborating with staff and volunteers across the organization.

Qualifications

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for performing a variety of manual tasks associated with the day-to-day operations for all FBEM warehouse buildings involving the storage, distribution and safe handling of food products including sorting, packing orders, unloading deliveries, re-packing food products. This position will ensure superior customer service to all internal team members and other stakeholders of the organization. All activities will support the organization’s mission, culture, and strategic plan objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Create and maintain a positive work environment in alignment with the Company core values.
  • Supports the smooth execution of workflow within the Warehouse/Operations Department, effectively interfacing with Inventory, Transportation and with all other stakeholders of organization.
  • Performs variety of general warehouse duties to include pulling orders, sorting products, and processing donated product.
  • Comply with standards of safe food handling procedures.
  • Assists with loading and unloading incoming and outgoing trucks.
  • Must complete and maintain certification for SERV Safe, Civil Rights, and AIB standards.
  • Must instruct lead volunteer groups to perform a variety of warehouse tasks that support food distribution goals.
  • Maintain “FIFO” throughout warehouse operations.
  • Move product while minimizing waste.
  • General warehouse cleaning maintaining AIB/Feeding America standards.
  • Must accurately complete and submit paperwork as required by FBEM procedure.
  • Work effectively with stakeholders from diverse populations, revealing sensitivity, understanding and acceptance of others.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with all Food Bank special events.
  • Must provide excellent customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum one (1) years’ experience working in a warehouse or a product distribution center operation as a general warehouse worker is highly preferred.
  • Experience in operating power equipment is preferred.
  • Computer experience (Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook) helpful.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read and write English and perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs, with two-man lift.
  • Ability to speak clearly over the phone and walkie-talkie radio.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail, handle interruptions, maintain focus on tasks and produce accurate work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to understand and comply with Feeding America & AIB/ Safe Food Handling Practices & Procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment is situated in a warehouse setting, characterized by extensive walking on concrete surfaces. Depending on the season, employees may experience sweltering heat during the summer months and bitter cold during the winter. Additionally, they may frequently enter and exit freezers and coolers, encountering extreme temperature fluctuations. The workspace can be dusty at times and occasionally noisy due to the movement of motorized vehicles within the facility. On occasion, employees may be required to work outdoors, potentially exposed to various weather conditions.

Furthermore, the nature of the job exposes employees to spoiled food and sharp objects due to handling damaged products. The tasks primarily involve the movement of boxes, requiring employees to lift objects weighing between 25 to 30 pounds, as well as bend, stoop, and manage objects up to 75 pounds using warehouse equipment. Manual pallet jacks are used, necessitating the ability to push and pull pallets exceeding 2,000 pounds. Employees may be required to work evenings and weekends, especially for special events and projects.
