Job Title – CHHA / CNA
Certified Homemaker‑Home Health Aide (CHHA) / CNA
Objective
To provide personal care services and help clients maintain their independence, and to assist them with activities of daily living and household and family support services.
Reporting Structure
- The Certified Homemaker‑Home Health Aide (CHHA) works under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing and/or Nursing Supervisor.
- The CHHA reports administratively to the Administrative Assistant/Human Resources Manager.
Education
- Completion of a 76‑hour Certified Homemaker‑Home Health Aide training program approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
- A nursing student may work as a homemaker‑home health aide with a written New Jersey Board of Nursing waiver in place of a certificate.
Qualifications
- A current, valid homemaker‑home health aide certificate in good standing issued by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
- Ability to pass a written/oral competency examination with a minimum score of 70%.
- Ability to demonstrate proficiency and clinical competencies related to the skills required of a certified homemaker‑home health aide.
- Ability to read, write, and carry out verbal and written instructions in English, follow the plan of care as well as the delegation/direction of the Director of Nursing and/or Nursing Supervisor.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work with the elderly, disabled, and sick, and work effectively with the demands of the job; be flexible with work hours and location.
Physical Requirements
This position routinely requires work in a variety of home settings and travel to and from clients’ homes, either by public transportation or car. The CHHA must be able to meet the physical demands of field work in client homes, including lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, standing, bending, twisting, stair climbing, transferring clients, reaching, kneeling, and walking. The role involves exposure to blood and body fluids, household dust, mold, mildew, dirt, and cleaning solutions, and requires carrying out household appliances.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform personal care and activities of daily living as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or Nursing Supervisor.
- Monitor temperature, pulse, and respirations.
- Position clients for circulatory and respiratory comfort.
- Assist with bathing, including bed, sponge, tub, or shower use.
- Shampooing (sink, tub, or bed).
- Provide nail and skin care.
- Maintain oral hygiene.
- Provide personal hygiene related to toileting and elimination.
- Apply safe transfer techniques and ambulation with assistive devices.
- Maintain normal range of motion and positioning; assist with exercises and activities.
- Encourage handwashing.
- Guarantee proficiency in communication skills.
- Observe, report, and document client status and care provided.
- Implement basic infection control procedures.
- Recognize changes in body function and report to nursing supervisor.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
- Recognize emergencies and know emergency procedures.
- Address physical, emotional, and developmental needs of clients, respecting privacy and property.
- Ensure adequate nutrition and fluid intake; assist with feeding.
- Apply anti‑embolic stockings, assist client with oxygen, and position for circulatory and respiratory comfort.
- Provide care to clients with cognitive impairment, seizure disorder, post‑stroke rehabilitation, or diabetes.
- Promote sleep.
- Any other task the agency may choose.
- Perform homemaking tasks per plan of care, including meal planning, grocery shopping, light housekeeping, laundry, errands, bed linen changes, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dusting, wastebasket emptying, garbage removal, refrigerator cleaning, bathroom cleaning, kitchen cleaning, and dishwashing.
- Accompany clients to doctor’s appointments only with approval from the Director of Nursing and/or Nursing Supervisor and upon family request.
- Follow Senior Helpers policies, including attendance, punctuality, dress code, identification, assignment acceptance, accurate time sheet and weekly aide activity sheet completion, and health and in‑service requirements.
- Report client status changes to the Director of Nursing and/or Nursing Supervisor.
- Respond to emergencies by calling 911 and Senior Helpers.
- Adhere to infection control and safety procedures per agency policy.
- Maintain client confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
- Provide emotional support, companionship, socialization, and motivation through conversation, encouragement, and recreation.
- Arrive at work on time.
- Clock into the telephony system.
- Respond to emails from Senior Helpers staff.
- Maintain HR compliance documentation.
- Complete orientation, including GEMS Training Module 1, Infection Control.
- Adhere to all Senior Helpers policies and procedures.
- Tackle any additional tasks as assigned by Senior Helpers staff.

Objective
To provide caregiving services and help clients maintain their independence and assist them with household and family support services.

Primary Responsibilities
- Companionship and conversation.
- Light housekeeping.
- Household management.
- Errands.
- Apparel selection (e.g., laying out clothes).
- Meal planning and preparation.
- Laundry and linen changing.
- Medication reminders.
- Transportation using client’s or your own vehicle.
- In sleep‑over or live‑in situations, prepare client sleeping area at night.
- Document activities in the Daily Documentation Log, if applicable.
- Record daily hours worked and services performed on the Weekly Time Sheet, review with client, and submit the signed form every Monday by 1:00 PM.
- Report any significant client changes to the office immediately.
- Follow all policies and procedures as outlined in the Senior Helpers Employee Handbook and Training Manual.
Qualifications
- High School graduate.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to treat clients with dignity and respect.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English at an average adult level.
- Ability to drive vehicle to get to work.
- Valid driver’s license with no serious driving violations; current car insurance.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to new situations and locations.
