Job summary

Detroit Waldorf School invites applications for a First Grade Class Teacher to welcome the incoming class for the 2027–28 year. The ideal candidate embodies warmth, creativity, and a strong Waldorf foundation, capable of guiding students from first through eighth grade with a developmentally attentive approach.

Responsibilities include designing a Waldorf curriculum, integrating storytelling, movement, and the arts, establishing daily rhythms, assessing progress, and maintaining family

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Waldorf grades teacher certification required.
• Strong understanding of Waldorf education, child development, and the grades curriculum.
• Ability and commitment to guide a class from first through eighth grade.
• Strong classroom management, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate with families and build partnerships.

Responsibilities

• Plan and teach a Waldorf curriculum for the first grade (through 8th grade trajectory).
• Bring subjects to life with storytelling, movement, music, visual arts, and practical activities.
• Establish classroom rhythms, routines, and expectations to support learning, independence, and community.
• Observe and assess progress; maintain records and prepare reports.
• Respond to individual learning needs in collaboration with families and staff.
• Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers; conduct conferences and class meetings.
• Collaborate with subject teachers to provide a cohesive educational experience.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school committees.
• Support school events and community activities; maintain a safe, welcoming classroom.
• Plan for ongoing development of the class with intent to continue through eighth grade.
