Job summary

The Learning Center for the Deaf invites applications for a Classroom Teacher at Walden School. The role focuses on delivering quality education to deaf students aging 8–22, with instruction aligned to IEPs and close collaboration with the clinical team.

You will develop engaging lessons, adapt materials for diverse learners, and document progress for quarterly reports and family updates. This is an in-person position prioritizing ASL communication and inclusive education.

Qualifications

• Must hold a Masters Degree in Education/Deaf Education.
• Massachusetts state certification preferred.
• Conversational fluency in American Sign Language required; native or near-native preferred.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the clinical team to adapt instruction to student needs.
• Prepare daily lesson plans aligned with IEP goals.
• Develop thematic units addressing educational and emotional needs.
• Provide lesson plans and assignments for classroom assistants.
• Document student progress and communicate findings to families and staff.
• Incorporate visual aids and curriculum modifications as needed.
• Assist with IEPs, reports, and timely documentation.
• Ensure safety and appropriate physical responsibilities when required.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Classroom Teacher is responsible for providing quality educational service to Walden School students. This includes planning creative lessons and classes that satisfy IEP goals, maintaining a classroom environment that fosters learning, and implementing behavior or treatment plans as they apply to the classroom setting.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work collaboratively with the school’s clinical team to adapt and modify their instruction to meet the individual needs of their students.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural differences within the school community.
• Prepares daily lesson plans and educational programming consistent with students’ Individualized Educational Plans.
• Provides detailed lesson plans and assignments for classroom assistants.
• Develops thematic units that identify long-range goals and objectives with respect to the educational and emotional needs of the students, taking into account the varying learning styles of individual students.
• Prepares instructional materials incorporating principles of effective instruction, such as: visual aids, curriculum modifications, and mediated learning principles.
• Writes educational portions of IEPs, quarterly reports, and other reports as necessary, according to established deadlines.
• Reports on students’ progress through written and verbal communication.
• Makes learning goals clear to the students and maintains high standards and expectations.
• Some lifting may be required when working with young students or students with special needs, however, TLC embraces and celebrates a spirit of inclusion and diversity, and reasonable accommodations and modifications will be made whenever possible.
• The diversity of our student population may require that some assignments have a heavier physical responsibility due to safety.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the Department Supervisor and/or Program Leader.

Requirements:

• Masters Degree in Education/Deaf Education
• Massachusetts State Certification (preferred)
• A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language required, with native, or near-native ASL fluency preferred
• Verbal and written communication skills are at sufficient level to ensure effective communication
• Understanding of child/adolescent mental health
• Interpersonal skills developed to a level which will allow smooth cooperation at all levels within the agency
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record when driving students or performing work-related duties
