As a social justice organization, Legal Aid at Work’s mission is rooted in the firm belief that all people deserve respect, dignity, and self-determination at work, at school, and in their communities. Structural and systemic racism—with the oppression of Black and Indigenous people at its core—and other forms of injustice shape the society and the civic, political, and legal systems in which we work and live. Legal Aid at Work is committed to developing and nurturing an organizational culture that will dismantle systems of oppression, uplift people from underrepresented communities, and create a workplace that is truly equitable and inclusive. As such, we strongly encourage BIPOC candidates and those with lived experiences and low-wage workers to apply.
Legal Aid at Work seeks a Staff or Senior Staff Attorney (depending on years of experience) for our Wage Protection Program. We seek candidates with a deep commitment to advancing workers’ rights, who will assume significant responsibility in impact and enforcement litigation and other advocacy efforts on behalf of low-wage workers.
The Wage Protection Program aims to help build a just economy where all workers are empowered to win fair wages and dignified workplaces through legal representation and advocacy. We believe that building worker power is fundamental to achieving our mission. As lawyers, we strive to ground our legal advocacy in community-led efforts because we know that without the strength and backing of organized and informed workers, legal gains will not last. For this reason, we often work in partnership with worker centers and other community-based organizations. Our commitment to our clients includes not just legal representation but ensuring that they are educated and empowered through the process. We strive to center and prioritize the most marginalized workers in predominately low-wage industries, because an economy that works for them will help all workers. We also aim to bring litigation that has the potential to improve industry practices, by targeting either large employers within a particular market, or common practices that employers use to evade wage-and-hour liability.
The Staff Attorney will work within and across teams to further the goals of the Wage Protection Program. The Staff Attorney will assist with all of the team’s advocacy efforts, with a particular emphasis on litigation of class actions, Private Attorney General Act lawsuits, and other multi-plaintiff cases. The Staff Attorney is responsible for:
