Role Summary/Purpose:

The VP, Staff Cryptography Engineer will serve as a key role in safeguarding enterprise multi-cloud systems, networks, and data. The position is responsible for designing, developing, driving, implementing, leading, and managing multi-cloud Information Security Engineering activities for the Cryptography program, including the underlying capabilities/technologies. Additionally, this role will act as a trusted peer and stakeholder advisor within the organization, working closely with Information Security Engineering leadership to ensure delivery of the overall program roadmap aligned with the Cryptography strategy and vision.

Job Description

The VP, Staff Cryptography Engineer is part of the Synchrony Information Security Cryptography Team, serving as a subject matter expert in Cloud Security, Cryptography, Information Security, Key/Secrets Management, Privacy, Public Key Infrastructure, and Tokenization. The role involves advancing cryptography, data privacy/protection, and key/secrets management across multi-cloud platforms, systems, and practices. The candidate should have a strong understanding and experience with Cloud Security, Cryptography, DevSecOps, and related areas, focusing on delivering enterprise data protection controls, automation, and supporting processes.

Essential Responsibilities
  1. Promote engineering excellence through automation, collaboration, and orchestration.
  2. Collaborate with architecture teams to identify capability gaps and develop solutions.
  3. Lead ongoing DevSecOps/Engineering support for a global cryptography program leveraging multi-cloud data protection capabilities.
  4. Manage technology infrastructure, identify gaps, and oversee change, disaster recovery, and incident management processes.
  5. Serve as a technical lead among Information Security engineers.
  6. Contribute to documentation to ensure a mature security infrastructure.
  7. Prioritize work using Agile processes and communicate risks and impediments to leadership.
  8. Design and implement multi-cloud security measures to protect enterprise assets.
  9. Administer and support multi-cloud infrastructure components like API security, firewalls, encryption, PKI, secrets management, etc.
  10. Mentor and serve as SME within the team and organization.
  11. Act as a SAFe Product Owner for cryptographic technologies.
  12. Support a “you build it, you own it” operational model.
  13. Coordinate with program managers, architects, and teams on technical impacts and risks.
  14. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years in Application Development, Security, or related; or 7+ years of work experience without a degree.
  • 3+ years in Cloud, Cryptography, and DevSecOps.
  • 3+ years in leadership roles, preferably as a Cryptography Engineer.
  • 4+ years in compliance frameworks (COBIT, ISO27001, NIST, etc.).
  • Hands-on expertise with API development/security, AWS, Azure, GCP, cryptography, and related technologies.
Desired Characteristics
  • Ability to work under pressure with multiple projects.
  • Certifications in security, cloud, or governance are a plus.
  • Experience designing and managing cloud security solutions (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with Agile and SAFe methodologies.
  • Understanding of operational security management.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to influence across teams.
Additional Details

Grade/Level: 12

Salary Range: $135,000 - $230,000 USD annually, plus bonus. Actual salary depends on experience and market adjustments.
