POSITION TITLE: SVP or VP, Engineering & Project Management

REPORTS TO: Executive Vice President

PURPOSE:

Lead the Engineering & Project Management group by setting department goals, advising the CEO and Executive Vice President, and providing technical oversight and/or support to the development, construction, operation and maintenance activities of DGC and its subsidiaries across the full generation portfolio, including natural gas-fired thermal generation (simple cycle and combined cycle) and renewable and emerging technologies such as offshore wind, onshore wind, solar, energy storage, distributed energy, demand control and off-grid / behind the meter large load systems, as well as transmission, by participating in various meetings and reviewing all technical and project documentation of the various projects. The group assumes execution responsibility for a project upon Financial Close and transfers responsibility to Asset Management and O&M Management at Commercial Operation. Advise DGC management to establish appropriate DGC group governance structure and create synergies among DGC subsidiaries.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (Must be able to perform these responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation.)

  • Provide oversight from a technical perspective in the development or acquisition of greenfield or brownfield thermal, renewable and energy storage projects of DGC subsidiaries. Provide analysis and feedback to assist DGC management in the proper governance of the subsidiaries.
  • Provide assistance and advice to the DGC business development division and DGC subsidiaries in the execution of their various activities from a technical perspective.
  • Foster intercompany cooperation and coordination to encourage synergy among subsidiaries and eliminate duplication of efforts.
  • Seek MC Energies group synergies, encourage knowledge sharing among DGC subsidiaries and MC Energies to avoid duplication/conflict among groups.
  • Provide strategy for DGC’s digitalization efforts and practical use of new technologies for new business. The Engineering & Project Management team of DGC will be reporting to this position.
  • Identify technological trends or events that have potential negative or beneficial impacts for DGC’s current and future business activities and update the appropriate parties within DGC about these items.
  • Maintain industry contacts, identify and evaluate potential business opportunities that fit within the DGC business plan and recommend for further development or rejection.
  • Organize and provide direction to the Engineering & Project Management group within DGC, including engineering, design, project scheduling, cost control and construction management functions.
  • Manage the execution of projects from Financial Close through Commercial Operation, including EPC contract administration, schedule and budget management, construction management and oversight, commissioning and start-up, and the orderly transfer of the completed facility to Asset Management and O&M Management.
  • Lead technical due diligence in support of M&A and asset acquisition efforts, including technology risk assessment, plant condition assessment, and capital expenditure forecasting for thermal and renewable assets.
  • Provide plant engineering support to DGC’s operating fleet, including major maintenance and outage planning, LTSA technical oversight, root cause analysis, uprate and life extension evaluations, and emissions compliance.
  • Provide conceptual design, cost estimating and scheduling support to Business Development for new build and repowering opportunities across thermal, renewable and energy storage technologies.
  • Lead the selection and qualification of EPC contractors and major technology suppliers (e.g., combustion turbines, wind turbines, solar modules, inverters and battery energy storage systems), and lead the negotiation of EPC, major equipment supply and long-term service agreements in coordination with Legal, Finance and Business Development.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline is required. M.S. in Engineering or MBA preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus.
  • 15 to 20+ years of progressively responsible experience across a variety of technical / engineering and business roles, with knowledge and industry connections regarding the technical aspects of thermal power generation (gas-fired simple cycle and combined cycle, including combustion turbine technology, long-term service agreements and major maintenance) as well as renewable and other burgeoning areas such as wind, solar, energy storage, distributed energy, demand control and behind the meter (BTM) systems. Career experience should include the following:
  • Design engineering (Lead Discipline Engineer / Project Engineer / EPC Project Manager) with a major AE / EPC company, with schedule and budget responsibility;
  • Field experience in construction management / oversight, commissioning and start-up;
  • Conceptual design work supporting Business / Project Development efforts, and due diligence experience supporting M&A endeavors;
  • Some experience and knowledge in IT, digitalization, and utility scale solar is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing highly technical staff, outside consultants and vendors.
  • Forward looking, agile and purposeful leadership in forming and guiding project teams to success.
  • Candidate should have held an executive or senior management position with an EPC or Engineering Firm, or in the engineering / construction organization of an independent power producer or utility.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop the group, provide technical guidance to its members, and interface effectively with the other DGC groups that rely on its support, including Business Development, Asset Management, O&M and Finance.
