Job summary

Sylvania in Indiana invites applications for a head coach to lead our sport program. You will instruct athletes in fundamentals, strategy and conditioning, supervise athletes, and collaborate with staff, administration and parents to promote teamwork and discipline.

Candidates should hold a teaching certificate or complete 64 college hours, be at least 21, pass a health exam, and have knowledge of the sport. Prior coaching is preferred; you will assist with equipment, scheduling and game plans.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a provisional or standard teaching certificate, or having completed sixty-four semester hours of college or university as documented.
  • Must be twenty-one years of age or older.
  • Has knowledge and background in the assigned sport.
  • Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is preferred.
  • Must pass health examination.
  • Must not have any immoral or criminal history.
  • Must have the ability to work with school staff, administration, community, parents and students.

Responsibilities

  • Has a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policy approved by the Woodford County Board of Education.
  • Has knowledge of the existing system and state regulations and implements these regulations consistently.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of the command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Maintains discipline and works to increase morals and cooperation within the school sports program.
  • Assists the Head Coach in scheduling and assists in providing transportation to tournaments and special sports events.
  • Assists in necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
  • Assist the Head Coach in providing documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
  • Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
  • Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary.
  • Attends staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the Head Coach.
  • Arrives early enough before practices, contests, and meetings to adequately prepare and remains long enough afterward to help players with problems.
  • Plans and implements in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Attends most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
  • Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Head Coach.
  • Practice sessions show evidence of careful preparation in terms of selected objectives, activities and procedures.

SUPERVISES:
  • Athletes and team assigned to him/her and assumes supervising control, when acting in head coaching capacity, over all athletes.
JOB GOAL:
  • To carry out the aims and objectives of the sport program as outlined by the Head Coach. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
  • Assists the Head Coach in scheduling and assists in providing transportation to tournaments and special sports events.
  • Assists in necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
  • Assist the Head Coach in providing documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
  • By his/her presence at all practices, games, and while traveling, provides assistance and guidance to and safeguards for each participant unless assigned other responsibilities or absence with the knowledge of the Head Coach.
  • Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
  • Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES:
  • Is accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment. Collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing and storing of equipment and submits to the Head Coach an annual inventory and current records concerning equipment.
  • Recommends to the Head Coach budgetary items for next year in his/her area of the program.
  • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices and authorizes who may enter.
  • Authorizes the athletes with whom he or she is working, to only be in appropriate areas of the building at the designated times for sports related activities.
  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks in areas designated for use by the assistant coach and assigned athletes, when custodians are not on duty.
PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Assists the Head Coach in carrying out his responsibilities.
  • Instructs team members as to changes in the rules and teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the Head Coach.
  • Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering. (For both Head Coach and Athletic Director)
  • Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the Head Coach of that sport.
  • Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the Head Coach.
  • Arrives early enough before practices, contests, and meetings to adequately prepare and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions. Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Never criticizes, admonishes or argues with Head Coach or any other staff member within the ears or eyes of players or parents.
  • Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Head Coach.
  • Attends most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
  • Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Head Coach.
PLANNING FOR INSTRUCTION:
  • Practice sessions show evidence of careful preparation in terms of selected objectives, activities and procedures.
  • Selects appropriate teaching aids/drills and has them ready to use.
  • Practice and game plans reveal that sequence and continuity of activities are regarded as important factors in learning.
  • Begins and ends practice sessions according to announced schedules.
  • Includes appropriate safety instruction in all lesson plans and practices.
