Job summary

The Greenway Conservancy in Boston seeks a Volunteer Manager to lead a dynamic volunteer program supporting park care, ecological data collection, and community engagement. The role emphasizes expanding volunteers' roles as stewards of the Greenway and deepening their connection to the Conservancy’s mission.

You will recruit and curate diverse volunteer opportunities across departments, coordinate tours and events, and share compelling stories and photographs to showcase impact.

Qualifications

The Greenway Conservancy, the non-profit responsible for the management and care of The Greenway, is seeking a highly motivated and reliable individual to join our team as the Volunteer Manager. The Volunteer Manager will oversee our volunteer program, which offers opportunities for individuals, corporate groups, students, and other community groups to experience hands-on learning while they assist us with park care and organizational stewardship. The Conservancy welcomes over 500 volunteers annually to assist with planting and landscape care, programmatic support, ecological data collection, and park cleaning. Additionally, the Volunteer Manager will foster new and strengthen existing relationships with individuals and organizations through tours and speaking engagements with Conservancy staff. As the Conservancy begins implementing its new strategic plan, we are seeking a candidate motivated by the opportunity to expand and innovate the volunteer programs, deepening volunteers' roles as stewards of the park and strengthening their connection to the Conservancy's mission and impact.

Responsibilities
  • Assure high-quality, engaging, and innovative experiences for volunteers resulting in a beneficial contribution to The Greenway and The Conservancy.
  • Oversee relationships with individual volunteers, corporate groups, local universities, and other volunteer partners, providing excellent customer service.
  • Collaborate with all departments, especially Horticulture and Maintenance, to develop group and individual volunteer opportunities, providing communication, coordination, and staff support. Periodically assess volunteer fee structure for corporate projects.
  • Collaborate with the Institutional Giving Manager on corporate relations, including identifying volunteer partners that are strong prospects for additional forms of support.
  • Work collaboratively with Horticulture to oversee the volunteer management for the Phenology and Butterfly Monitoring Programs .
  • Foster relationships with volunteers and staff to properly match recruited volunteers to appropriate projects.
  • Recruit volunteers and organize volunteer work plans for Conservancy events including fundraising events, festivals and other family events, and public art events.
  • Plan volunteer engagement and recognition events, such as annual appreciation picnics, park tours with staff, and volunteer training.
  • Market all volunteer programs, gather photographs and stories, and manage volunteer stewardship pieces including monthly volunteer newsletters, social media posts, and website pages.
  • Implement a system for routine feedback from volunteers and staff about programming experience. Work with staff to proactively address feedback and improve program outcomes throughout the season.
  • Manage budgets, prepare invoices, and draft agreements for volunteer programs, Greenway tours, and other Greenway engagements. Track payment schedules for outstanding invoices and monitor budgets for the volunteer program, and tour-related activities.
  • Organize and oversee Greenway tours, working with staff to plan tours for the general public and donors, as well as accommodate private tour requests.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working at or studying in a related field, including nonprofit programming, environmental studies, public parks/gardens, volunteer management, or fundraising.
  • Proven track record of:
  • working with a diverse range of audiences and organizations;
  • effective collaboration and communication across departments/teams

  • Demonstrated skill in creative problem-solving, can-do attitude, and excellent people-skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Bilingual skills a plus, especially in Chinese languages given our proximity to the Chinatown neighborhood.
  • Computer proficiency, especially in Google for Work (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail) and Microsoft (Excel, PowerPoint, Word). Salesforce experience is a plus.
  • Experience working in a diverse and inclusive organization is a plus.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather, to kneel or stand for periods of time, and to lift 50 pounds, which are all needed for volunteer event oversight.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive Conservancy vehicles in downtown Boston to move event supplies. Vehicle training will be provided.

Logistics
  • This is a full-time (40 hours a week) position with full benefits.
  • Work hours are generally Monday through Friday, but flexibility is required to accommodate some evening or weekend shifts, typically no more than 1-2 times/month.
  • Work will generally take place indoors, but the position will require time in the park working at volunteer events, especially between April and October.
  • This is a hybrid position with the option to work remotely two days a week if the work allows.
Compensation and benefits

Salary Range: $58,000 - $62,000 annually.
