Job description

All CDC recommended vaccines are required vaccinations at Oaklawn. Seasonally, and upon determination of Senior leadership, the Influenza Vaccine may be mandatory; in those years, compliance is required. For all vaccines, Religious Exemptions and Medical Contraindications are available.

Job Summary: This role works to develop and maintain the hospice volunteer program.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently uses an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in accomplishing his/her goals and objectives in a manner that helps others to achieve their goals and objectives.
  • Assists with follow-up on requests for volunteer information and actively recruit volunteers.
  • Assists with the 15-hour volunteer orientation-training program.
  • Assists with screening applications, interviewing, hiring, and obtaining required documents.
  • Makes volunteer assignments based on qualifications and experience.
  • Verifies that volunteer understands duties prior to their first visit. Introduces the volunteer to the family when appropriate and follows up with the family to make sure they are satisfied with the care provided by volunteers.
  • Notifies the family when a volunteer cancels or a change needs to be made in the assignment.
  • Monitors time sheets and volunteer documentation. Verifies that the volunteer is following the plan of care.
  • Functions as part of the hospice team and prepares volunteer updates for the IDT case conference meetings.
  • Ensures that volunteer files are kept up to date. Tracks volunteer hours and mileage in a database.
  • Responsible for annual evaluation of each active volunteer. Conducts supervisory home visits when needed. Documents evaluations for their personnel files. Assists with providing on-going education for active volunteers as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in activities such as fundraising, holiday events, memorial services, and liaison with the hospital auxiliary, and other events appropriate for volunteer participation.
  • Available in the office to take calls and inquiries from volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications: 18 years of age and experience in hospice and understanding of hospice philosophy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: An associate degree or equivalent is preferred. Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred. One (1) years’ experience in a home care or hospice office setting preferred. Must be willing to attend educational classes, workshops and seminars required to maintain the necessary skill level. Knowledge is evident in successful implementation and completion of office assignments. Ability to learn basic computer programs such as MS Word and parts of the clinical computer system for Hospice, as well as Oaklawn. Must have effective interpersonal skills in all areas of communication with strong oral communication skills. Must be able to work independently and be capable of solving problems using good judgment. Able to maintain patient confidentiality. Able to perform a wide variety of basic office duties as well as work on a computer. Must be able to take directions and work in a collaborative environment. Able to support the hospice philosophies. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in order to work with customers from a variety of cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds. Able to prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands. Able to meet deadlines with a high degree of accuracy. Demonstrates personal accountability for own continuous growth and development and seeks out appropriate learning opportunities to enhance competency and improve performance. Creates a caring experience for both internal and external customers, is courteous and respectful, anticipates and responds to customer needs. Is committed to continuous improvement for customers which includes safety, quality of care and excellent service, and gives high priority to customer satisfaction.

Working Conditions: Primarily works in a clean, well lit, air-controlled area. Required to have transportation to the office in all types of weather.

Physical Requirements: Constantly stand, sit, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, talk/hear, taste/smell, lift/carry 1 to 25lbs. Frequently walk, reach, push/pull, lift/carry 25 lbs. Occasionally bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch, lift/carry 50 lbs.
