ASSISTANT COACH JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB DESCRIPTION: The job of Assistant Coach is performed to assist in designing and implementing the athletic program for the assigned sport in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Providing supervision of students during all aspects of the program.
  • Serving as a positive role model to student athletes and representing Thomasville City Schools in a well‑respected manner.
  • Upgrading knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
  • Having thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the TCS School Board and implementing them.
  • Understanding the proper administrative chain of command and referring all student/parent requests or grievances through the appropriate channels.
  • Maintaining discipline and working to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
  • Demonstrating character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Giving constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct.
  • Being present at all practices, games, and while traveling.
  • Providing assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant.
  • Providing training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
  • Understanding the policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Directing student managers, student assistants, and statisticians.
  • Fostering a desire to win, an attitude of good sportsmanship, personal pride, and pride for their school and community.
  • Arranging for issuing and storing equipment, submitting an annual inventory and current records to the head coach.
  • Recommending to the head coach budgetary items for the next year in the area of the program.
  • Monitoring equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing who may enter.
  • Permitting athletes to be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
  • Examining the locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
  • Being responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Securing all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instilling in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
  • Assisting the head coach with instructing players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Assessing player’s skills, monitoring players during competition and practice, and keeping the head coach informed of athletic performance.
  • Maintaining a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
  • Working within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach of the sport, and assisting with determining game strategy.
  • Assisting the head coach with supervising athletes during practices and competition.
  • Attending all staff meetings and carrying out scouting assignments as outlined by the head coach.
  • Modeling sport‑like behavior and maintaining appropriate conduct toward players, officials, and spectators.
  • Arriving 15 minutes before practice, contests, and meetings to adequately prepare and remaining long enough afterwards to help players and participate in staff discussions.
  • Helping in the planning and implementation of in‑season and out‑of‑season conditioning and weight programs. Attendance should be consistent.
  • Never criticizing, admonishing, or arguing with the head coach or any staff member in front of players or parents.
  • Never leaving practices, games, or other contests where a student’s attendance is requested until the last student has left.
  • Performing other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and may be requested by the head coach.
Qualifications
  • Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport is desired.
  • Knowledge and background in the assigned sport.
  • The assistant coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
Minimum Training and Experience

Teacher license and employment as a teacher by the Thomasville City Board of Education is strongly preferred. Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.

Reports To

The head coach, in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.
