Job Description
Athletic Coach
Reports to: the head coach and athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the middle school principal.
Supervises: May advise, coordinate, and support a staff of middle school coaches with the athletic director and principal.
Qualifications
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (preferred).
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and a commitment to ongoing learning.
- Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
General
- Focus on good sportsmanship and mental health while managing community and parent expectations.
- Accept additional responsibilities such as extended time, injury risk, and due process matters.
- Evaluated yearly and, upon recommendation, renewed for the next school year.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement all athletic policies approved by the Rowan Salisbury Schools Board of Education.
- Apply state and league regulations consistently and interpret them for staff.
- Follow the proper administrative line of command and channel all requests or grievances through appropriate channels.
Staff Responsibilities
- Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to teach assistants and design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
- Encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance and training staff.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff effectiveness at season end.
- Maintain discipline, address grievances, and bolster morale and cooperation.
- Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
Administrative Duties
- Safeguard and protect assigned equipment.
- Advise the head coach and recommend policy or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
- Mentor athletes, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitor student athletes’ grades and conduct.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
- Distribute training rules, schedule, calendar, and sport regulations to athletes and parents.
- Adhere to injury and medical procedures and emergency plans.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Assist athletes in college or advanced education selection.
Finance, Facility, and Equipment
- Accountable for all equipment, properly marking and identifying before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, controlling access and requisition.
- Ensure athletes remain in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
- Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games for cleanliness.
- Maintain cleanliness and proper maintenance of sport equipment and facilities.
- Instill respect for equipment and school property in each player.
Public Relations
- Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other sports programs and through extracurricular outreach.
- Maintain positive relationships with news media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
