The University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, FL is seeking a Visual Field Technician to support clinicians by performing visual field testing and data collection.

You will administer tests (confrontation fields, Humphrey fields, VRVF, tangent screens, Amsler grid), educate patients, maintain equipment, and coordinate with physicians and staff to deliver high-quality eye care.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 0-1 year of relevant work experience in ophthalmic settings preferred.
  • Performs basic computer tasks and documents patient data accurately.
  • Communicates effectively with patients and team members.

Responsibilities

  • Determines optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with a lensometer.
  • Performs visual field tests (confrontation fields, Humphrey, VRVF, tangent screens, Amsler grid).
  • Gathers data and assists providers during diagnostic testing and consultations.
  • Educates patients on testing procedures and safety.
  • Monitors equipment calibration and ensures proper working order.

To learn how to apply for a faculty or staff position, please review this tip sheet .The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for a Visual Field Technician (VFT) in Miami, Florida.The Visual Field Technician (VFT) is primarily responsible for assisting providers by gathering data and performing tests realting to the patient’s visual. This position maintains an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient and high quality eye care.JOB FUNCTIONSDetermines the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the lensometer or autolensometer.Performs the following test procedures on patients of all ages:Confrontation fieldsHumphrey visual fieldsVirtual reality visual fieds (VRVF)Tangent screen visual fieldsAmsler gridInsertion and removal of hard and soft contact lensesAdministration of eye dropsAuto refractionEducates patients on testing procedures.Monitors the progress and facilitates the testing of patients undergoing diagnostic testing and/or consultations in other areas/departments.Serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, and other departments.Provides patient-centric care.Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, and values.Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.Presents a professional appearance.Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.Completes University of Miami mandatory in-services and online training.Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.Meets daily productivity goals.Ensures all equipment is calibrated, and instrumentation is in proper working order.Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.Works evenings and weekends as needed.Performs organizational duties as assigned.Makes suggestions to Physicians and/or Practice Managers regarding possible improvements in the practice.Handless medical emergencies in adherance to hospital policy in a timely and competent manner while putting the patient’s safety and well-being first.This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities as necessary.QUALIFICATIONSEducation:High School diploma or equivalentCertification and LicensingExperience:0-1 years of relevant work experienceBLS (Basic Life Support) only from the American Heart AssociationKnowledge, Skill, and Attitudes:Performs basic computer skills.Works well with patients of all age groups.Presents with a professional appearance.Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge.Works independently and in a collaborative environment.Proficient in Microsoft Office.The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.UHealth-University of Miami Health System, South Florida's only university-based health system, provides leading-edge patient care powered by the ground breaking research and medical education at the Miller School of Medicine.
