  • Lead initiatives to support transparent, rigorous research practices across disciplines at UNM.
  • Provide consultations and workshops on lifecycle data management, analysis, visualization, and ethical data practices.
  • Contribute to ULLS data science initiatives, including coordination of Software, Data, and Library Carpentry workshops.
  • Stay informed of evolving policies, technologies, and best practices in data management and open scholarship.
  • Build strategic partnerships within the University and beyond to foster interdisciplinary research and innovation.
  • Participate as an active member of the LRE Graduate and Faculty Engagement.
  • Support development and implementation of Graduate and Faculty Engagement programs, including reference consultations and library instruction.

Position Summary

The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences (ULLS) has an opening for a Visiting Lecturer Data Scientist. This position is a full‑time, 12‑month faculty appointment that can be renewed annually for up to a maximum of three years. It holds the rank of Visiting Lecturer, with a minimum salary of $70,000, negotiable based on experience and qualifications. The role reports to the University Libraries’ Director of Learning, Research, and Engagement. The college encourages early‑career candidates and members of minoritized or marginalized groups to apply. The desired start date is September 1, 2026.

Primary Duties
  • Lead initiatives to support transparent, rigorous research practices across disciplines at UNM.
  • Provide consultations and workshops on lifecycle data management, analysis, visualization, and ethical data practices.
  • Contribute to ULLS’ data science initiatives, including coordination of and participation in Software, Data, and Library Carpentry workshops.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited Library/Information Science program or equivalent, or an earned PhD in a field engaged with data science.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting researchers and campus stakeholders in leading practices in lifecycle data management, including planning, data collection, quality assurance, analysis, visualization, and scientific communication.
  • Experience with teaching or workshop instruction.
  • Experience supporting researchers with the development of data management plans that address funder requirements.
  • Proficiency with Python, R, Git, or other open source languages and platforms.
  • Knowledge of leading practices in FAIR data sharing.
  • Knowledge of frameworks for ethical data practice (e.g., CARE), including principles of tribal data sovereignty.
  • Knowledge of general purpose and specialized data repositories.
  • Demonstrates flexibility across interdisciplinary data and analysis types.
  • Experience working collaboratively.
  • Spoken or written proficiency in Spanish or an Indigenous language of the greater Southwest.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.
