The University of Pittsburgh Center for Philosophy of Science invites Visiting Fellows to spend a term or a full two-term academic year.
Fellows are expected to pursue their own research, give a lunchtime talk, participate in the center's intellectual life, reside in Pittsburgh, and use offices. Fall and Spring terms run Sep–Dec and Jan–Apr; full-term residence is encouraged, with arrangements for summer work if possible.
The Visiting Fellows Program offers philosophers of science the opportunity to spend a term or full two-term academic year at the Center, and we welcome applications from all interested candidates.
Visiting Fellows are not required to teach, serve on committees, or take on administrative responsibilities. They are, however, expected to pursue their own research, give a lunchtime talk, participate in the Center's intellectual life by attending talks and discussions, reside in Pittsburgh, and make regular use of their offices. Fall fellowships run from September 1 through December, and Spring fellowships run from early January through the end of April. Fellows are expected to participate for the full semester.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree, typically in philosophy, history, or philosophy of science, or hold an established position within the professional philosophy of science community. In special cases, the Center will consider applicants with doctorates in other fields, though such applicants should be aware that their chances of acceptance are lower.
The Center expects a Visiting Fellow's research to be supported by their home institution, a foundation, or a government agency. The Center's monthly stipend is intended to help offset the additional costs of relocation, not to serve as primary funding.
The Center's academic terms are Fall (September 1–December 31) and Spring (January 1–April 30); the two-term academic year comprises both. The Center discourages visits for periods shorter than a full term or the full academic year. With prior written arrangement, Fellows may, depending on eligibility, remain in residence through the summer, though the Center is unable to provide a stipend or office support during this period. Separate arrangements can be made for scholars wishing to work in the Archives of Scientific Philosophy over the summer.
A Fellow may visit the Center for a maximum of two semesters within any ten-year period. In practice, this means that after an initial semester-long fellowship, a Fellow may return for one additional semester within the following ten years. A Fellow who has completed a full academic year at the Center must wait ten years before returning. After ten years, eligibility resets.
