Job description

Position Description

The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University welcomes applications for a three-year visiting assistant professorship in contemporary Taiwanese humanities. Candidates should engage with the culture of Taiwan from a combination of local, regional, and transnational scales. The position requires proficiency in one or more Taiwanese languages as well as the demonstrated ability to speak to broad audiences across disciplinary and area studies boundaries. Fields of potential, but not exhaustive, interest to the department include cinema/media/visual studies, popular culture, popular religion, environmental humanities, and literature.

Candidates will be expected to teach two courses each semester, and to offer multiple courses specifically in Taiwan Studies (at least one each semester), while contributing to the depth, breadth and excellence of the department’s offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will enter a department that approaches Asian Humanities from diverse disciplinary and theoretical arenas, including literature, film, media and visual culture, literary and intellectual history, religious studies, the investigation of imperial and colonial cultural processes, gender and sexuality, translation studies, and study of modernities. While the Department of Asian Studies constitutes the organizational and intellectual home for this position, the successful candidate will also make contributions to one or more of Cornell University's thematic and area studies programs.

Candidates must have completed their Ph.D in a relevant field in the humanities by June 2027.

Pay Range: $90,000 - $105,000 annual.

Actual salary offers in the College of Arts and Sciences will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.
