Job description

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks a Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor of Biology to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by demonstrating academic excellence and the potential for distinctive contributions to the holistic development of students. Teaching-focused candidates with a strong background in genetics, developmental biology, or molecular biology are encouraged to apply. The appointment shall begin in the fall of 2025 and may be reappointed for a second year.

The Department of Biology at Marian University is a collaborative academic community committed to fostering student engagement, active learning, problem solving, and hands-on learning. The department offers B.S. and B.A. degrees in Biology and supports students pursuing careers in healthcare, especially through our Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine. Candidates who can contribute to learning and mentoring from diverse perspectives are encouraged to apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, and integrating faith and life.
  2. Teach a load of 24 credit hours per year, including courses in Principles of Biology, molecular biology lectures, and laboratories, depending on expertise and departmental needs.
  3. Contribute to the development and implementation of department and college activities and projects.
  4. Engage in research, scholarship, and professional activities.
  5. Participate in campus and university service, including faculty governance and co-curricular programs.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  1. A Ph.D. in Biology or a related field.
  2. For Associate level, a minimum of five years of teaching experience and a plan for undergraduate research involvement.
  3. Potential for excellence and innovation in student-centered instruction.
  4. Interest in curriculum and program development.
  5. Potential for ongoing scholarship, including research, publication, and professional activity.
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Ability to collaborate with colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
  8. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to support student success.
