Job summary

GM Defense is seeking a Virtual Propulsion Analysis Engineer to apply advanced analysis and simulation tools for propulsion system development. The position requires strong MATLAB/Simulink proficiency, experience with energy- consumption platforms, and the ability to drive analyses end-to-end in a hybrid work

Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering (required).
  • 5+ years’ experience in propulsion or related engineering.
  • Proficient in MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Experience with analysis/simulation tools such as AMEsim, GT Suite, Verde or equivalents.
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles for mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of engines, transmissions, drive units, electric motors, power electronics and battery tech.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with partners.
  • Independent thinking and teamwork skills.
  • U.S. Person or export-control eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Lead virtual development activities end-to-end with simulation plans, model builds, analyses and results delivery.
  • Quantify effects of propulsion technologies on energy consumption, performance and drivability for various configurations.
  • Support in defining next generation propulsion systems via analytical evaluation of architectures and technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to define requirements, integrate models and ensure system-level performance.
  • Lead energy consumption and performance analyses to support project deliverables and perform quick trade studies.
  • Present analytical results to project teams and leadership.
  • Develop, maintain and improve processes and automation (e.g., Python, Tcl/Tk, AI/ML) to streamline workflows.

Job Description

Virtual Propulsion Analysis Engineer for GM Defense is responsible for applying advanced analysis and simulation tools to support propulsion system architecture development, with emphasis on optimizing energy consumption (EV range/fuel economy) and performance. Partner with cross‑functional engineering teams to design, evaluate, and refine propulsion concepts that meet or exceed customer expectations and program requirements.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead virtual development activities end-to-end, owning simulation plans, model builds, analyses, and results delivery to meet performance, program timing and quality targets
  • Conduct analysis/simulation to quantify effects of advanced propulsion technologies (engine, hybridization, electrification) on vehicle energy consumption, performance, and drivability for various propulsion system configurations
  • Support product teams and leadership in defining next generation propulsion systems with analytical evaluation of the proposed architectures and technologies (ICE, HEV, BEV)
  • Collaborate effectively with cross‑functional partners (Design, DREs, Validation, Architects, suppliers, IT, and other CAE teams) to define requirements, integrate models, and ensure system‑level performance is achieved
  • Lead the energy consumption, performance analysis to support system project deliverables and timing and conduct trade studies to evaluate design alternatives (quick studies)
  • Present analytical results to project/program team and leadership
  • Develop, maintain, and improve processes, tools, and automation (e.g., Python, Tcl/Tk, AI/ML, process automation) to streamline workflows, increase efficiency, and support unique GMD requirements
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • BS in Engineering
  • 5+ years’ experience in propulsion or related engineering
  • Proficient in MATLAB and Simulink capability
  • Experience with analysis/simulation tools, such as: AMEsim, GT Suite, Unified Model (Verde) or other industry standard energy consumption platforms
  • Understanding and application of engineering theory and principles of operation for mechanical/electrical mechanisms
  • Knowledge of engineering mechanics, physics, and fundamental understanding of engines, transmissions, drive units, electric motors, power electronics and battery technology
  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals
  • Independent thinking and strong teamwork skills are needed to succeed
  • Candidate must either be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee) or a non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain any required export control authorization.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in testing, development, calibration pertaining to energy consumption and performance
  • Experience with system analysis and applying systems engineering methods
  • Experience in powertrain and/or vehicle controls
  • Knowledge of applied optimization and design of experiments
