Job summary

Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, SC is seeking a Spoken Language Interpreter (PRN, onsite) to facilitate communication between LEP patients and staff. The interpreter translates spoken messages and sight-reads materials to support patients’ understanding of procedures, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.

Requires a high school diploma, 1 year of medical interpreting experience, and national certification or eligibility to obtain CCHI within one year.

Qualifications

• Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Minimum Years of Experience: 1 Year of experience as a medical interpreter.
• Required Certifications/Licensure: Nationally certified or must obtain certification within first year (CCHI).
• Required Training: Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter proficiency testing and training on hire.

Responsibilities

• Provides interpretation services accurately using medical, business, and general terminology.
• Serves as cultural mediator to enhance communication between staff and patients/families.
• Maintains certification through continuing education and keeps current with linguistic nuances.
