About the Job

Under the direction of the project manager, the interpreter relays oral information between speakers of two different languages, using consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes, while adhering to ALTA policies and confidentiality standards. The interpreter must understand and follow all Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics for Interpreters.

Responsibilities

1. Render messages accurately, maintaining content, context, and style.
2. Facilitate effective communication between parties speaking different languages.
3. Maintain professionalism in demeanor and communication.
4. Protect client confidentiality according to protocols, HIPAA, and industry standards.
5. Act as a cultural broker when necessary.
6. Resolve conflicts related to language and cultural nuances.
7. Use industry-specific terminology and reference glossaries and training materials.
8. Interpret idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances effectively.
9. Perform sight translations and interpret in various modes as requested.
10. Serve as a cultural and linguistic resource for successful outcomes.
11. Work collaboratively with team members and clients.
12. Manage schedules to meet deadlines and respond promptly using communication tools.

Requirements

• Native fluency in English and the requested language.
• Understanding of regional accents and linguistic styles.
• Ability to choose appropriate interpretation modes and ensure accuracy.
• Self-awareness of linguistic limitations, seeking clarification as needed.
• Cultural awareness and ability to mediate intercultural communication.
• Strong interpreting skills, including note-taking and conflict resolution.
• Adherence to ethical standards and confidentiality policies.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.
• Organizational skills to handle stressful situations and adapt to changes.
• Relevant education, training (minimum 40-hour interpreting course), and preferred certification.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
