Job description

Vice President, Private Credit Strategy & Process Design

Team: Loan Operations

Location: Boston, MA or New York, NY

About The Role

Liberty Mutual Investments (LMI) is seeking an experienced and strategic operations professional to join our growing Loan Operations team as Vice President, Private Credit Strategy & Operations. This is a senior, high-impact role and a key addition to a newly formed function being purpose-built to support the continued growth and build-out of a best-in-class loan operations platform. This VP will serve as the operational lead for LMI's private credit process design and operating model evolution — responsible for ensuring that Loan Operations functions as an active, knowledgeable partner across the full private credit lifecycle, and that LMI's private credit operations keep pace with industry best practices, portfolio growth, and increasing structural complexity. This role reports to the Head of Loan Operations and drives the private‑credit-specific operating model within the enterprise framework that role sets. The ideal candidate is an effective and skilled collaborator who understands the downstream impact of operational decisions across the organization and ensures that the perspectives and concerns of all relevant stakeholders are raised and considered. This is a high‑impact individual contributor role with the opportunity to grow into a people‑management capacity as the team scales.

Key Responsibilities
Private Credit Operating Model & Strategy
  • Drive the private‑credit-specific operating model within the enterprise loan operations framework set by the Head of Loan Operations, including all related workflows, procedures, and standards
  • Serve as a key contributor to the broader loan operations operating model evolution, bringing deep private credit expertise and a lens toward industry best practices and emerging standards
  • Identify gaps between current‑state operations and the capabilities needed as the portfolio scales in size, complexity, and structural diversity; translate findings into actionable process improvements and workflow enhancements
  • Represent Loan Operations in cross‑functional program workstreams focused on infrastructure, platform development, and operating model design
Private Deal Process Design & Enhancement
  • Serve as a key driver of process enhancement across the private credit deal lifecycle — from pre‑close operational readiness through post‑close administration and final payoff
  • Identify gaps and risks in existing closing, funding, and documentation workflows; develop and implement process improvements in coordination with relevant stakeholders
  • Establish standards for how deal terms, modifications, and lifecycle events should be captured and reflected consistently across systems of record
  • Drive early operational engagement on new deal types or structures to surface constraints and ensure processes are in place before execution begins
Lifecycle Process Oversight
  • Identify process gaps and control weaknesses in lifecycle event management; design improvements to ensure consistent, accurate, and timely processing across all systems
  • Map and build controllable, scalable processes for drawdowns and other recurring loan events, ensuring clear ownership, sequencing, and system alignment
  • Assess operational readiness for new and complex loan structures across the full spectrum of private credit instruments, and build the processes needed to support them
Data Quality & Structure Alignment
  • Serve as a key support resource on data standards and loan structure definitions — developing a deep understanding of how loan data flows across systems and ensuring alignment between structure, standards, and downstream reporting and analytics needs
  • Apply technical expertise to troubleshoot and identify root causes of data quality issues at the standards and structure level; develop and execute on process changes in an inclusive and collaborative manner, managing expectations across stakeholders throughout
  • Partner with Data, Technology, and operations colleagues to ensure loan data is accurate, consistently structured, and fit for portfolio analytics, performance reporting, and regulatory use
  • Champion systemic, durable solutions to data quality challenges rather than one‑off fixes
Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Collaborate with Investor, Finance, Treasury, Portfolio Operations, Product, Technology, and Data teams to ensure alignment across the private credit investment lifecycle
  • Proactively identify and raise operational risks, process concerns, and stakeholder impacts in a constructive and solutions‑oriented manner; ensure the interests of all affected parties are considered in operational decisions
  • Serve as a thought partner to investment teams on the operational implications of new deal structures, fund strategies, and market developments in private credit
  • Communicate process changes, improvement initiatives, and strategic priorities clearly to senior stakeholders
Operational Risk & Control
  • Contribute the private‑credit‑specific layer of the enterprise operational risk and control framework owned by the Head of Loan Operations; ensure private credit workflows adhere to internal policies, audit standards, and industry best practices
  • Identify and drive automation and process improvement opportunities across private credit operations workflows
Industry Knowledge & Continuous Improvement
  • Stay current on industry trends, best practices, and developments in private credit operations, fund administration, and the evolving private credit management landscape
  • Effectively translate learnings from external sources — industry forums, peer networks, and market developments — into practical insights and recommendations for LMI's operating model
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, or a related field
  • Advanced degrees (e.g., MBA) are a plus
  • CPA or CFA preferred but not required
  • 10+ years of experience in private credit operations, loan operations, or a related middle or back‑office function within an asset manager, alternative investment firm, or financial institution
  • Deep knowledge of private credit loan structures across direct lending, broadly syndicated loans, unitranche, mezzanine, and revolving and delayed draw facilities, and the operational requirements of each across the full lifecycle
  • Experience with fund administration, including familiarity with fund structures relevant to private credit strategies
  • Familiarity with loan administration systems, IBOR and ABOR environments, and how data flows across a multi‑system loan operations infrastructure
  • Technical aptitude for data quality management — ability to troubleshoot, identify root causes, and drive process changes in a structured and collaborative way
  • Prior experience with corporate actions, amendments, restructures, workouts, and distressed exchanges, including familiarity with the operational requirements and documentation standards associated with each
  • Strong understanding of industry developments in private credit operations and the evolving private credit management landscape; demonstrated ability to translate external learnings into internal action
  • Highly effective collaborator with proven experience working across multiple teams and functions in a matrixed organization; able to raise risks and represent stakeholder perspectives in a constructive, solutions‑oriented manner
  • Experience supporting or leading operating model design, workflow development, or process improvement initiatives in a private credit or loan operations context
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior team members, with the ability to grow into a people‑management role as the team expands
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to translate operational complexity into clear narratives for senior leadership and cross‑functional partners
  • Able to operate at both the strategic and tactical levels, driving workstreams independently while keeping stakeholders aligned and informed
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini, with the ability to apply them practically in a loan operations context — whether to accelerate process documentation, synthesize complex information, draft communications, or identify patterns across large datasets
