Job description

The Vice President of Construction Operations will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the company’s construction activities, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with established quality standards. This executive will lead construction operations, develop and implement operational strategies, strengthen project execution, and ensure alignment between field operations, project management, finance, and senior leadership.

The ideal candidate will have significant commercial general contracting experience, with a proven track record of leading complex commercial construction projects, developing high-performing teams, managing financial performance, and driving operational improvements across a growing organization. Multifamily construction experience may be considered as a secondary component of the candidate’s background, but the majority of experience should be within commercial general contracting.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for all construction operations.
• Oversee project execution from pre-construction through completion, ensuring projects meet schedule, budget, quality, and safety objectives.
• Establish and monitor operational standards, processes, procedures, and performance metrics.
• Lead and develop construction leadership, project management, field operations, and other operational teams.
• Partner with senior leadership to develop annual operating plans, budgets, forecasts, and long-term growth strategies.
• Monitor project financial performance, including budgets, costs, margins, change orders, and overall profitability.
• Identify operational risks and implement strategies to mitigate schedule, cost, quality, and execution challenges.
• Ensure effective resource allocation, including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and project management resources.
• Establish accountability for project performance through consistent KPIs, reporting, and performance reviews.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, architects, engineers, and other project stakeholders.
• Oversee contract administration, change management, claims, and project closeout activities.
• Partner closely with estimating and pre-construction teams to ensure projects transition effectively into execution.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, productivity, quality, and profitability.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, contractual requirements, regulatory standards, and safety programs.
• Evaluate organizational structure and staffing needs to support current operations and future growth.
• Provide regular updates to the CEO, President, and/or executive leadership team regarding operational performance, financial results, risks, and opportunities.
• Support business development efforts by providing operational insight, project expertise, and client-facing leadership when appropriate.

• Coach and develop project and construction leaders to strengthen their technical, financial, and leadership capabilities.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive construction experience, with the majority of experience in commercial general contracting.
• Extensive commercial GC experience is required.
• Multifamily construction experience may be considered, particularly when combined with substantial commercial GC experience.
• Demonstrated experience leading construction operations at a senior management or executive level.
• Proven experience overseeing multiple projects, teams, and operational functions simultaneously.
• Strong understanding of construction project financials, budgeting, forecasting, and profitability.
• Experience managing project managers, superintendents, and other construction professionals.
• Demonstrated ability to improve operational processes and organizational performance.
• Strong contract, negotiation, and client relationship management skills.
• Excellent communication, leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to balance strategic priorities with hands-on operational leadership.
• Strong knowledge of construction safety, quality control, scheduling, and risk management.
• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred.

Preferred Experience

• Senior leadership experience with a commercial general contractor.
• Experience overseeing multiple concurrent commercial construction projects.
• Experience with ground-up and/or large-scale commercial construction.
• Multifamily construction experience is a plus but is not required.
• Experience working in a growth-oriented or entrepreneurial environment.
• Experience developing and implementing operational KPIs and performance reporting.
• Experience scaling construction teams, processes, and infrastructure to support organizational growth.
