Job description

As part of its 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, the Allegheny County Medical Society (ACMS) is creating a brand-new senior leadership position: Vice President, Membership & Communications. This is a rare chance to help recalibrate a changing organization's membership and communications function.

About ACMS

ACMS is the professional association representing physicians, residents, and medical students throughout Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The organization is in the middle of an ambitious multi-year strategic plan focused on broadening its reach among physicians, strengthening the value members get from ACMS, and deepening relationships across the region's health systems, practices, and medical training programs.

The Opportunity

You'll lead ACMS's efforts to grow and retain membership, build relationships with physicians across Allegheny County, and create meaningful ways for physicians to connect with ACMS and one another. It's a role built for someone who's equal parts relationship-builder and strategist - someone who can turn ideas into action, use data to sharpen results, and help ACMS expand its reach and relevance within the physician community.

What You'll Do
  • Own the full membership lifecycle - recruitment, onboarding, engagement, retention, and re-engagement - and serve as a visible, trusted point of contact for physicians across the county.
  • Lead engagement strategy for key physician audiences, including women physicians, early-career physicians, independent physicians, residents, and medical students, and oversee the Membership Task Force and Women Physicians Committee.
  • Build and manage ACMS's annual program and event portfolio, including strategic oversight of the Distinguished Awards Program.
  • Direct member communications and marketing strategy across email, web, social, and publication, including the membership team's support for ACMS Bulletin magazine content and production, working alongside the Executive Director, who serves as managing editor.
  • Serve as ACMS's primary staff partner to the affiliated Pennsylvania Medical Society on membership and physician engagement, and support the Executive Director on PAMED House of Delegates coordination.
  • Supervise and develop the one team member, and build annual goals, budgets, and performance reporting for the membership and communications function.
What We're Looking For
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in membership, physician relations, communications, association management, healthcare engagement, or nonprofit leadership.
  • A track record of supervising and developing staff, and managing budgets with a strategic eye.
  • Strong relationship-building instincts alongside sharp writing, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Comfort using data and AI tools to sharpen decisions, reporting, and results.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a professional association, medical society, healthcare organization, or nonprofit — and familiarity with the Pittsburgh/Allegheny County healthcare community or a CAE credential — are a plus, not a requirement.
How We Work

ACMS runs on a hybrid schedule - three days in the office, two remote, with Tuesdays as our one required all-staff, in-office day. Because we host many events, this position can expect some early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekend commitments tied to physician events, along with limited local travel.

Compensation is commensurate with experience, and ACMS offers a comprehensive benefits package along with significant workplace flexibility.

We're building the team behind ACMS's 2026–2029 strategic priorities, and we'd love for you to be part of it.

ACMS is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
