Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care, handling and monitoring of small animals in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
  • Assist faculty in routine and specialized procedures (exams, sample collection, anesthesia monitoring, pain management, CPR).
  • Support students and interns by teaching and demonstrating technical skills (medication administration, IV placement, fluid therapy).
  • Manage patient schedules, medical records and inventory to ensure smooth operation of the practice/service.
  • Maintain equipment and ensure safety and regulatory compliance (AAHA, IACUC, USDA, OSHA, AVMA-COE).
  • Participate in rounds and mentor future veterinarians and rotating interns.

Veterinary Technician - Small Animal Community Practice

The Small Animal Community Practice Veterinary Technician will provide hands‑on patient care and support to faculty veterinarians, interns, and veterinary students. The role includes direct animal care, clinical support, and teaching assistance, and client communication. This position is ideal for a technician who enjoys working in a dynamic, team‑oriented teaching hospital environment and who values mentorship and professional development.

Responsibilities
  • Provide daily care, handling and monitoring of animals in the small animal services of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).
  • Assist faculty in routine and specialized procedures (physical exams, diagnostic sample collection, medication administration, anesthesia monitoring, pain management, CPR, specialty procedures, etc.).
  • Support veterinary students and small animal interns by teaching and demonstrating technical skills (medication administration, IV catheter placement, fluid therapy, bandaging, patient monitoring, etc.).
  • Manage patient schedules, inventory, and medical records to ensure smooth operation of the Community Practice/shelter medicine service.
  • Assist and support assigned service and other services as time/resources allow.
  • Maintain all equipment in the community practice and shelter medicine areas of the VTH.
  • Manage and monitor hospitalized patients.
  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards (AAHA, IACUC, USDA, OSHA, AVMA‑COE).
  • Participate in academic rounds and contribute to the teaching and mentorship of future veterinarians and small animal rotating interns.
  • Provide client communication and discharge education as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Dean, Department Head, VT H Director or Section Chief.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program (or equivalent).
  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure, in the state of Alabama.
  • At least one year of veterinary practice or academic veterinary technician experience.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to walk short distances.
  • Ability to lift and carry parcels, packages and other items.
  • Ability to view a computer terminal.
