Job summary

Leidos LLC seeks a Veterinary Technician I to support NAMRU-SA in San Antonio, TX. You will handle and restrain diverse animals, assist surgeries, and maintain housing, records, and health surveillance under federal contract requirements.

The role requires a High School Diploma/GED with experience or an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology with minimal related experience, and you must be willing to pursue ALAT certification. US citizenship and potential secret clearance are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED plus 2 years of related experience or Veterinary Technician Associates Degree plus 6 months of related experience.
• Willingness to work towards obtaining ALAT certification.
• Laboratory animal science experience preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required life-support certifications (AHA BLS, Healthcare Provider Course, or American Red Cross CPR).
• Willingness to complete annual occupational health exams for facility access.
• US citizenship is required due to Federal contract requirements.
• Candidate may need SECRET classification access; preference for those with clearance.

Responsibilities

• Daily handling and restraint of various small and large animal species.
• Assist in surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, disease prevention and health surveillance, proper housing, and record keeping.
• Maintain sterile equipment, traffic patterns, pest control, and QA procedures.
• Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with standards.
• Assist with procurement requests and animal shipping coordination.
• Assist with inventory maintenance.
• Coordinate animal research activities among contractors, scientists, staff and technicians.

NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

Primary Responsibilities

• Daily handling and restraint of various small and large animal species
• Conduct and support surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping, and specific pathogen-free techniques
• Maintain traffic patterns, sterile equipment, pest control, and quality assurance procedures
• Conduct daily and weekly inspections to ensure compliance with standards
• Assist in preparation of purchase requests to include animal procurement and coordination of shipping procedures
• Assist with maintenance of inventory supplies
• Supports coordination of animal research work activities between contractors, scientists, animal care staff and research laboratory technicians

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED plus 2 years of related experience OR Veterinary Technician Associates Degree plus 6 months of related experience
• Willingness to work towards obtaining ALAT certification
• Laboratory animal science experience preferred
• Ability to obtain and maintain required life-support certifications (AHA BLS, Healthcare Provider Course, or American Red Cross CPR; web-based courses not accepted)
• Willingness to complete annual occupational health exams to maintain facility access clearance
• Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required
• The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level
• Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level
