Job description

Our Roots, Our Reach

With over 20 years of specialty and over a decade of experience in emergency medicine, Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Service (MVSES) provides exceptional veterinary care throughout the large Louisville area, state of Kentucky, southern Indiana and surrounding areas.

CARE • COMPASSION • TRUST • TEAM

Are you energized by fast-paced medicine, meaningful patient interaction, and working with a collaborative veterinary nursing team?

Put your clinical skills to work when patients need them most. MVSES is seeking experienced veterinary technicians for evening and overnight emergency care. Join a privately owned specialty and emergency hospital where you can build advanced nursing skills, care for challenging cases, and work alongside a collaborative ER and ICU team. Bring your experience, grow your confidence, and help deliver compassionate emergency care at MVSES.

A schedule you can plan around
  • Second shift: 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
  • Third shift: 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
  • Set schedules with four 10-hour shifts or an alternating three-days-on/four-days-off and four-days-on/three-days-off rotation, depending on the position. No rotation between day and night shifts. Some holidays are required.
Your Shift in Action

You clock in onsite at 11800 Capital Way and step into a fast-moving, tightly coordinated evening or overnight flow-second shift (3:00 p.m.–1:00 a.m.) or third shift (10:00 p.m.–8:00 a.m.). The board changes quickly, priorities pivot, and you stay locked in with your team as cases arrive in waves.

Between patient updates and treatment plans, you keep communication crisp, transitions seamless, and the environment safe and controlled. Expect set scheduling options-four 10-hour shifts or rotating three-days-on/four-days-off (and vice versa)-with occasional holiday coverage. You end the shift knowing you helped turn chaos into clarity for patients and people alike.

Compensation and shift differentials

Competitive hourly compensation based on experience and qualifications, plus differentials for eligible hours worked:

  • Evening hours, 6:00 p.m. to midnight: an additional $4 per hour.
  • Overnight hours, midnight to 6:00 a.m.: an additional $5 per hour.
  • Saturday and Sunday daytime hours, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.: an additional $3 per hour.

Holiday pay, call-in stipends, and a retention bonus are also offered.

Support for your work and your growth
  • Standardized on-site training in technical nursing procedures, medical math, advanced diagnostics, equipment, RECOVER emergency care and communication skills.
  • Mentorship from our Criticalist and experienced, RECOVER-certified ER and ICU technicians.
  • Advanced imaging capabilities, including MRI, CT, and ultrasound.
  • Generous continuing education allowance with paid time off.
  • Paid state license and professional membership.
Our Benefits include;
  • Paid time off and sick pay.
  • 100% employer-paid health insurance, with dental and vision options.
  • 401(k) with employer match.
  • Annual uniform allowances.
  • Personal pet care discounts.
The work you will do

Working with our veterinarians and nursing team, you will provide timely, attentive care for emergency and hospitalized patients. Responsibilities are performed under veterinary direction and appropriate to your credentials, training, and demonstrated competency.

  • Triage patients, obtain thorough histories and vital signs, and promptly communicate changes in condition or the need for immediate intervention.
  • Provide nursing care, monitor pain and respiratory status, perform wound care, and assist with emergency stabilization and resuscitation.
  • Collect samples, perform in-house laboratory testing, and obtain diagnostic radiographs using appropriate safety procedures.
  • Place peripheral IV catheters, administer prescribed medications and fluids, and apply accurate medical calculations.
  • Assist with anesthesia monitoring and advanced procedures, including central lines, nasogastric tubes, sampling catheters, and arterial lines.
  • Maintain accurate records and treatment schedules using ezyVet and Vet Radar, and provide clear handoffs between shifts.
  • Handle and restrain patients safely, follow infection-control protocols, and provide compassionate client updates and discharge education.
What you bring
  • At least two years of relevant clinical veterinary experience is required.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician credentials are preferred; emergency or specialty experience is a plus.
  • Strong patient assessment, technical nursing, medical math, and communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize changing patient needs, stay organized in a busy ER, and collaborate with colleagues.
  • A willingness to learn, accept feedback, and advocate for patients while supporting their families.
