Job summary

Independence Animal Hospital in Independence, KS seeks a Credentialed Veterinary Technician to join our mixed‑animal practice. You will support veterinarians in anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, and diagnostics while educating clients and ensuring high‑quality patient care.

Requirements include a state veterinary technician license, ability to lift up to 25 lbs (with assistance for heavier lifts), OSHA PPE practices, basic computer skills, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• State license to work as a certified/licensed/registered veterinary technician in the state of employment.
• Ability to lift patients and equipment up to 25 pounds; with assistance for heavier lifts.
• Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE.
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS Office applications.
• Basic math and ability to calculate medication dosages.
• Strong communication skills to ensure patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery as needed.
• Assist with outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, plus client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vitals during procedures.
• Obtain samples and perform in-hospital laboratory testing.
• Take and maintain radiographs following safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restraint during exams.
• Administer medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments per veterinarian instructions.
• Maintain clean exam rooms, labs, and restock supplies; assist team in keeping public areas tidy.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism with clients and patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and team about patient plans and concerns.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Independence Animal Hospital is proud to serve the Independence, KS area for everything pet-related. Our practice is a full-service mixed-animal hospital and will see routine appointments, surgical cases as well as offer acupuncture services. Our in‑house capabilities include digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray, ultrasound, cold laser, indoor stocks, outdoor pen area, hydraulic tilt chute, and an OB chute. Our doctors are supported by our experienced credentialed technicians, assistants, and practice manager.

The Credentialed Veterinary Technician performs a critical role in providing high‑quality care for patients. Credentialed Technicians are key partners to the veterinarians, providing the appropriate support to ensure each client interaction and procedure is seamless and successful. Credentialed Technicians apply their professional skills in anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, laboratory testing, patient nursing, and client education.

Essential Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
• Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, as well as providing client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs of the patient during surgery.
• Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in‑hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
• Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following proper safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the discretion of the veterinarian.
• Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment, and lab areas; restock exam rooms with supplies. Assist other team members to keep the public areas of the practice clean; clean and maintain all medical equipment.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients; exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members including client discussions, patient plans, client concerns, etc.
• Any other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications

• State license to work as a certified/licensed/registered veterinary technician in state of desired employment
• Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
• Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS office applications, etc.
• Basic math and ability to calculate medication dosages
• Strong communication skills to ensure patient safety
