Job summary

Small Animal Emergency Services in Vass, NC seeks a Veterinary Technician Assistant to assist veterinarians and vet techs in a busy emergency setting. You will prepare exam rooms, restrain animals for procedures, monitor recovering patients, and help with basic lab work and radiographs.

The role requires the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, with long shifts and lifting up to 40 lbs. Training and development opportunities are available as part of our supportive team.

Qualifications

  • Basic familiarity with animal anatomy, physiology, and common veterinary terminology.
  • Compassionate and calm team player.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple patients.
  • Must be able to properly restrain pets.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in sample collection and medical history intake; radiographs & anesthesia monitoring bonus.
  • On-the-job training is common; vocational certification can be an asset.
  • Must stand for long periods and lift 40 lbs or more.

Responsibilities

  • Restraint: Safely and securely hold animals for examinations, blood draws, injections, IVC placements, and radiographs.
  • Husbandry: Feed, walk, bathe, and monitor hospitalized animals, reporting changes to the medical team.
  • Treatments: Administer medications as prescribed; assist on request during shifts.
  • Prep: Prepare animals for surgical procedures and position for X-rays.
  • After Surgery: Clean up surgery and restock post procedures.
  • Lab Work: Prepare biological samples and assist with basic diagnostics.
  • Sanitation: Sterilize instruments, clean tables, wash laundry, disinfect kennels and cages.
  • Facility: Stock exam and treatment areas with supplies.

Job description

Our mission at Small Animal Emergency Services is simple: provide exceptional emergency and critical care for the pets of Vass, NC while simultaneously offering comfort, compassion, and support to the people who love them. Our busy emergency hospital sees an average of 500 patients each month and is equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities; including an in-house IDEXX laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, and therapeutic laser technology. This allows our team to deliver high-quality, timely care for a wide variety of cases!

No two shifts are ever the same. Our medical team manages everything from minor injuries and routine emergencies to complex critical cases, such as septic ruptures, orthopedic trauma, cardiac arrest, and more. The diverse caseload offers continual opportunities to challenge and expand your clinical skills while making a meaningful impact on the lives of pets and their families.

Our hours of operation are:
  • Monday - Friday: 06:00 pm ~ 08:00 am
  • Saturday & Sunday: 24 Hours

Our veterinary technician assistants work alongside veterinarians and vet techs to provide hands-on animal care. They prep examination rooms, safely restrain animals for procedures, monitor recovering patients, and handle facility sanitation. This vital role balances clinical duties with routine patient husbandry.

Core Responsibilities
Patient Care & Handling
  • Restraint: Safely and securely hold animals for examinations, blood draws, injections, IVC placements, and radiographs
  • Husbandry: Feed, walk, bathe, and monitor hospitalized animals, reporting any behavioral or health changes to the medical team.
  • Treatments: Administer oral or topical medications as prescribed by the veterinarian, IF requested to do so by the technician/assistant on shift.
Clinical & Surgical Support
  • Prep: Prepare animals for surgical procedures (e.g., shaving and cleaning surgical sites) and position patients for X-rays.
  • After Surgery: Cleaning up surgery and restocking post procedures.
  • Lab Work: Prepare biological samples (fecal, urine, blood) and assist with basic laboratory diagnostics if needed.
Facility Maintenance
  • Sanitation: Sterilize surgical instruments,, wrapping packs clean examination tables, wash laundry, and disinfect kennels and cages.
  • Facility: stock exam and treatment areas with necessary supplies.
We're looking for:
  • Basic familiarity with animal anatomy, physiology, and common veterinary terminology.
  • Compassionate and calm team player.
  • The ability to multi-task.
  • Must be able to properly restrain pets.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in sample collection, obtaining medical histories, processing laboratory tests and radiographs, andanesthesia monitoring are a bonus!
  • Self-starter with the desire to continue to advance your knowledge and skillset.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is typically required; on-the-job training is common, though vocational certification can be an asset.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods and frequently lift or maneuver animals weighing 40 lbs. or more.
Pay Range: $15 - $18/hr. depending on level of experience
