Job summary

R & N Veterinary Group Inc is seeking a compassionate veterinary assistant to support doctors in medicine, surgery, and dentistry at our Santa Clarita facility.

You will obtain patient histories, record vital signs and weights, assist with anesthesia, take radiographs, prepare instruments, maintain medical records, and educate clients while collaborating with a dedicated, client-focused team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians with medicine and surgery in various roles
  • Obtain and record patient histories, vital signs, and weights
  • Perform in-hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for reference labs
  • Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments as prescribed
  • Administer fluids and blood products; operate and maintain IV pump
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia under veterinarian supervision
  • Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals
  • Prepare patients and instruments for surgery; clean and sterilize equipment
  • Ensure monitoring and support equipment are functional
  • Communicate with owners compassionately and professionally
  • Take radiographs with correct positioning
  • Provide vaccine, flea, and heartworm education; stay updated on preventive care
  • Maintain medical records in cooperation with veterinarians
  • Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies
  • Collaborate with the team to support hospital and doctors
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Admit patients for anesthesia procedures
  • Stock surgical materials; prepare gowns and packs
  • Prepare the surgery room
  • Prepare instruments for specific surgeries
  • Perform induction, intubation, and pre-anesthetic prep
  • Monitor post-operative patients
  • Clean the surgery room and instruments per sterilization protocols
  • Keep accurate anesthesia and surgical records
  • Accurately document medications and injections
  • Ensure patients go home well-groomed and safe
  • Clean, scale, and polish teeth using dental tools
  • Record dental problems in the chart and report to vet
  • Assist with oral extractions and dental procedures

Job description

GENERAL
  • Assist veterinarians with veterinary medicine and surgery in any appropriate capacity
  • Obtain and record patient histories, vital signs, and weights
  • Perform in-hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for reference labs
  • Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians
  • Administer fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian; use and maintain IV pump
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian
  • Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals
  • Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery; clean, maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials
  • Assure that monitoring and support equipment are in good working condition
  • Communicate with and educate owners in a compassionate, tactful, professional manner
  • Take radiographs – demonstrates proper positioning techniques
  • Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations in order to answer client questions, provide education on vaccines, flea and heartworm products
  • Maintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians
  • Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies
  • Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors, and the practice philosophy
  • Perform other duties as assigned
SURGERY
  • Admit patients scheduled for anesthetic procedures
  • Keep surgical materials stocked; prepare gown and surgical packs
  • Prepare surgery room
  • Prepare instruments; know type of surgical instruments required for specific surgeries
  • Perform induction/intubation and all pre-anesthetic procedures, including patient prep
  • Monitor patients post-operatively
  • Clean surgery room and instruments according to hospital sterilization protocols
  • Keep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical records
  • Accurately calculate and record all medications and injections administered
  • Ensure all surgery patients go home well-groomed and in an appropriate medical state
DENTISTRY
  • Clean, scale, and polish teeth using dental equipment and hand instruments
  • Record dental problems in record and report to veterinarian
  • Assist veterinarians with performing oral extractions or other dental procedures
