Job description

Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency (CARE) is seeking a board-certified surgeon or residency-trained veterinarian to join three established staff surgeons in a busy, well-supported service performing approximately 1,000 surgeries each year. We would especially welcome an experienced surgeon who enjoys teaching, values collaboration, and wants to help lead a strong clinical team.

CARE is independently owned by specialists who work in the hospital alongside the rest of the team. Decisions are made locally, doctors have a meaningful voice in how services evolve, and there is a genuine opportunity for associates to become owners. Because our owners are practicing veterinarians, they understand the day-to-day realities of the work and are accessible when challenges arise or support is needed.

A surgical service built around collaboration

The strongest part of CARE is the way our teams work together. Our surgeons collaborate closely with one another, with our emergency doctors, and with specialists throughout the hospital. When a case is challenging, you have smart, invested colleagues who are readily available to offer perspective, expertise, and support for you and your patient. For us, collaboration is not a recruiting phrase. It is how the hospital functions.

Our surgeons are supported by highly skilled technicians per doctor, a dedicated surgery CSR, and an on-site boarded anesthesiologist.

Broad surgery, with room to develop your interests
  • A healthy mix of orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, particularly oncologic surgery
  • Arthroscopy and laparoscopy
  • Fluoroscopy/C-arm capability
  • CT and MRI
  • Advanced surgical and diagnostic equipment
Teaching is part of the job

Our current surgeons genuinely enjoy teaching, and education is integrated into the service. Surgery currently has two surgical interns and a surgical resident. Staff surgeons participate in journal club and case rounds, work alongside an intern or resident on appointment days and surgery days and supervise the resident as they progress through procedures.

We are looking for a surgeon who brings experience and expertise while remaining curious and open to new ideas. Our surgeons are teachers and leaders within the hospital, and we invest in leadership development, communication, and emotional intelligence as part of building strong clinical teams.

A schedule designed for a long-term career
  • Four-day work week
  • Two dedicated surgery days each week
  • Shared emergency call
  • Additional compensation for being on call and for emergency call-ins

Emergency call is part of this position and is shared among the surgeons. We see surgical backup as an important part of supporting our ER doctors and the high level of emergency medicine they provide. On-call responsibilities and emergency call-ins are additionally compensated.

Who will thrive here

We are particularly interested in a surgeon who enjoys working as part of a team. The right person will be confident in their expertise, excited to teach, willing to learn from colleagues, and interested in being a leader within the service. We are looking for someone who will bring new ideas to CARE while also coming in with the curiosity to understand what already works well here.

About CARE

CARE is a specialist-owned, independently operated specialty and 24/7 emergency hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our specialists and emergency doctors work under one roof, creating a clinical environment where collaboration happens naturally and patients benefit from immediate access to multiple disciplines. Our owners are active in the hospital and accessible to the team, and qualified associates have the opportunity to pursue ownership.

Compensation & benefits

We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance; HRA support for general and mental health; CE allowance and association dues; license and professional liability coverage; life insurance; 401(k) with employer match; and opportunities to become an owner at CARE.
