Job summary

Pet Vet Roanoke is a boutique small-animal and exotic-animal practice where veterinary students gain hands-on experience shadowing a supervising veterinarian. Externs will participate in history taking, physical exams, treatment planning, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical observation/assistance while developing communication skills with the medical team and clients.

Externships range from two to eight weeks and are offered to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.

Qualifications

• Third- or fourth-year veterinary students are eligible.
• Externs gain hands-on exposure under supervision.
• Opportunities to observe/participate in surgeries and dental work.

Job description

Pet Vet Roanoke is a small practice with a boutique feel. We practice small animal and exotic animal care.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Pet Vet Roanoke are offered to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
