An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Each NVA hospital is unique but shares common features: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

The externship duration at Portland Veterinary Wellness Center typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of their year, are encouraged to participate. Students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
