Job summary

National Veterinary Associates (NVA) invites veterinary students to join an externship at a full-service hospital. The program provides hands-on clinical experience, instruction in wellness care, surgical procedures for shelter animals, and exposure to advanced orthopedic techniques.

Students gain exposure to radiography, ultrasound, Idexx diagnostics, and a supportive practice environment. Externships run two to eight weeks, welcoming 3rd and 4th year veterinary students who wish to observe,

Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Externship duration ranges from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships are available for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.

We have an 11,000 sq. ft. full‑service practice housing an on‑site Humane Society. Students can stay 2–8 weeks and are involved in wellness care, surgical procedures for shelter animals, and numerous client medical and surgical cases. Advanced orthopedic procedures such as fracture repairs, TPLO, and Tightrope are routinely performed. The hospital is fully equipped with digital radiography, dental radiography, in‑house Idexx equipment (Sedivia, CBC, Chemistry), ultrasound, heated surgical tables, fluid pumps, and more.

Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Stipend details are available on the NVA careers site.
